Chapter 503 Cayden Getting Furious
Xavier got to his knees and put his finger under Charles' nose.
Charles' body was still warm, but he was no longer breathing. It was apparent he had just been killed.
Without hesitation, Jake and the police officers left to go after the culprit who had fled the scene.
Jake was a skilled veteran with investigative abilities, so he was agile and swift.
However, the culprit was obviously better than him.
Regardless of Jake's speed, the culprit always managed to maintain a distance from him.
The dense forest was overgrown with bushes and vines, providing the perfect cover for the culprit to hide and move around. The agile figure used the foliage to his advantage and easily evaded the two's pursuit.
Jake could only occasionally catch a glimpse of the culprit's camouflage uniform which almost blended in with the foliage.
When the culprit was about to disappear from sight, Jake panicked and grabbed a gun from a nearby police officer. He flicked the safety off and fired a few shots in the direction of the escaping figure.
Despite his excellent shooting skills in the military, Jake couldn't stop the culprit, who managed to evade and escape despite being fired at.
He glared toward the direction in which the culprit had fled and gritted his teeth in frustration.
...
Cayden sat on the couch in the VIP lounge of the hospital, holding a cigarette between his fingers. His expression was cold and determined.
After Cayden spent the last few days at the hospital with Avery, his handsome face was etched with exhaustion.
Xavier and Jake stood in front of Cayden, reporting the situation to him guiltily. “Sorry, Boss. We were too late. When we arrived, Charles' aorta had been sliced open.”
Despite his usually composed demeanor, Xavier felt disappointed in himself for letting his employer down.
They had tracked Charles using the satellite and were close to uncovering the truth, but they were just one step too late. The culprit had killed Charles before they could reach him.
“Boss, the perpetrator who killed Charles was wearing a camouflage uniform and showed incredible agility. Based on his abilities, I believe he was a highly skilled soldier from the special forces. I'm sorry that I couldn't apprehend him,” Jake explained, his head hanging low with guilt.
Cayden had hired him to become Avery's driver as he was a skilled veteran with excellent investigative abilities.
Mr. Moore pays me handsomely, but I failed in completing the mission.
Cayden's expression turned icy as he gripped the handles of the couch, nearly snapping them in half. “Does that mean that all our clues have reached a dead end?”
Both of them said naught a word.
As Cayden grew increasingly irritated, Jake broke into cold sweat. He plucked up his courage to say, “Boss, we'll do everything we can to find Charles' killer as soon as possible. Please give us some time, and I promise we will get it done.”
Cayden took a puff of his cigarette. As the smoke billowed around him, he frowned unhappily. The temperature surrounding him dropped drastically.
An ominous silence hung in the air for some time.
A long while later, Cayden finally broke the silence. “I'll give you a few days to investigate!” One could hear the fury and exhaustion in his voice.
“Got it, Boss,” his subordinates who had failed their previous mission replied curtly.
Cayden stood up and walked toward the window, his tall and imposing figure casting a shadow in the room. He seemed as though he was a solitary eagle, unbreakable and unconquerable.
He gazed out at the city skyline as a determined look appeared in his eyes.
I will find the culprit even if it meant that I have to search the entire Ackleton. Whoever dared to hurt Avery will pay for it!
...
These few days, Avery couldn't walk as her legs were injured. She was bored being cooped up in the ward.
At first, Cayden planned to take Avery back to the mansion to recover, but Yuvan advised against it, citing that her legs had just undergone surgery and she needed rest. He proposed that she stay under observation in the hospital for a few days until she was deemed fit to be discharged.
Thus, Avery had no choice but to remain in the hospital, which reeked of antiseptic.
Fortunately, she was placed in the VIP ward, which was quiet and peaceful, aiding in her recovery.
As she had an upcoming test to become a Certified Professional Constructor, she took advantage of the peaceful environment in the hospital to review the relevant materials and study the test questions.
That day, Cayden left instructions for the caregiver to take good care of Avery before he left for his office.
He had a lot on his plate and couldn't be with Avery all the time. With numerous projects to manage daily, he had little free time. Furthermore, the arson case involving the housekeeper was scheduled to begin the following month.
He had promised Anthony that the housekeeper who committed arson would be sentenced to death.
Although she appeared to be an ordinary housekeeper, she had a relative with powerful connections in Beshya, making it difficult to ensure that she would be sentenced to death.
Nevertheless, Cayden had given his word to Anthony, so he had to carry out his promise.
The housekeeper who committed arson must receive a death sentence.
After Cayden left, Avery got busy reading her study materials.
Right then, the handsome Armand showed up in her ward with two large bags of gifts.
“Armand, why are you here?” Avery felt awkward to see him here.
The way he confessed his feelings for her one night made her extremely uncomfortable.
She was aware that foreigners were often expressive about their emotions and would confess their feelings to the women they liked, but she didn't have any interest in Armand.
“Hey, Rum. I was wondering why you didn't show up after the collaboration between Trident Group and Vivi Group started. It turns out you're hiding at the hospital. If Nina and Cecelia hadn't told me about this, I would've thought you had disappeared. Rum, why didn't you tell me that you were involved in such a serious accident? Look at you. It breaks my heart to see you lying in bed,” Armand said in an exaggerated tone and expression as he stared at Avery's cast. He blinked his blue eyes, feeling sorry for her.
Avery was speechless, and at the same time, she grew increasingly awkward.
She had only met Armand once, and she couldn't stand how enthusiastic he was.
“Eh? You're badly injured, and the man who you love should be taking care of you in this ward. Why isn't he here?”
Armand glanced around and didn't see anyone else.
He looked at Avery with an intense gaze and tried to convince her, “It seems like the guy you're in love with isn't a good catch. If you were my girlfriend and got involved in a severe car accident, I would stay here to take care of you, even if I had to quit my job. Why don't you break up with him and be with me instead, Rum?”
