Chapter 597 No Use Objecting
Allie felt displeased when she thought of the possibility that Cayden had registered his marriage with Avery and kept it a secret from Jeffrey and herself.
However, she felt slightly relieved when she remembered that Jeffrey had hidden the household registry.
Since Avery called off the engagement, Jeffrey had been upset with her. There was no way he would allow Cayden and Avery to register their marriage.
Cayden hugged Avery as they sat on the couch in the living room. When he saw Jeffrey, he greeted him, “Grandpa.”
Jeffrey hummed in response. He glanced at Avery's bump, and his serious expression gradually softened. “Her stomach is getting bigger. Did the doctor not mention when is the expected due date?”
Cayden held Avery's hand as he gently said, “It's around the twenty-sixth of October.”
“Since she's about to give birth, she should stay home and rest. Don't let her go to work anymore. It's not like she would earn much money. It would be a huge loss if she lost the baby because of exhaustion,” Jeffrey said sarcastically, an unhappy expression on his face.
However, Avery could hear the concern in his voice.
She replied softly, “Thank you for worrying about me, Old Mr. Moore. I'll rest when it gets close to the due date. Cayden isn't arranging much work for me at the company, so it's not tiring. I can still manage.”
Allie snorted. “How pretentious!”
Lily picked up her coffee and glared at Allie as she said calmly, “Even if she's putting on an act, at least she's serious about doing work instead of being a parasite that relies on men, unlike some women who want to become mistresses and shamelessly ruin other people's families. They're nothing but wastrels. Just like those disgusting parasites...”
Allie turned to glare at Lily. “Lily Berry, who the f*ck are you referring to? Do you think I'm dead? Who do you want to blame when you can't hold onto a man's heart? I'm warning you, you'd better watch what you say! Dad, look at Lily! Isn't she just looking for trouble?” she complained to Jeffrey.
Cayden leaned against the couch, furrowing his brows into a deep frown.
Avery placed her hand on his thigh and gently patted him, trying to help ease his frustration.
He lowered his gaze and grabbed Avery's hand as he looked out the window to stare at the scenery.
Jeffrey also felt his head ache when he heard the two women argue. He placed a cigarette between his lips and took a deep breath.
He turned to look at his daughters-in-law quarrel. Massaging his temples, he said, “That's enough. The children are all at home. You two better stop it!”
Allie was dissatisfied. “Dad, you saw it too. It's always Lily who's looking for trouble. She often criticizes and insults me. Is it wrong for me to defend myself? I know you're protecting her, but you can't be too biased all the time. Since Bruce left, my days in the Moore residence have been difficult. If it weren't for Cayden, my capable child, Lily might've done much worse to me and destroyed my life...”
Jeffrey trembled in anger. “I can't believe you would say that. What do you mean by your days in the Moore residence have been difficult since Bruce left? Did we not provide you with food to eat and money to spend? All these years, you've been living your life like a madam of the family. What are you not satisfied with? Would Bruce and Lily's relationship have gone downhill if you hadn't squeezed yourself into their lives? Would Bruce have gotten into a car accident? She only said a couple of things to you. Can't you just bear with her?”
Allie was fuming at how Jeffrey was obviously taking Lily's side.
However, before she could go on a rampage, she heard Jeffrey criticize Lily, “You should stop digging up those dark memories of the past... The children have all grown up. It's time for Kendrick to get married too. You're also at the age to become a grandma. We're all people who have lived half a century. Can't you put the past behind you? The dead have passed on. What use is there for you to continue being petty about it?”
Lily was pissed. “Dad, it's not a matter of me being petty. It's just that whenever I see Allie, I'll remember the dirty thing she did with Bruce! I feel uncomfortable knowing that her illegitimate child is older than Kendrick by two years! Back then, the Moore family was in a financial crisis. If the Berry family hadn't invested in the family, you would've gone bankrupt! My Kendrick is only twenty-eight years old, yet he's just holding a small position in the company. I refuse to let this slide...”
Lily was plotting something.
She wanted to take advantage of Jeffrey's guilt toward herself so he could compensate her by providing benefits for Kendrick.
Since Jeffrey was still alive, she wanted to try her best to seek benefits for Kendrick. Once Jeffrey passed, most of the company's shares would fall into Allie and her son's hands. By then, she wondered if Cayden would show them mercy instead of going to the extreme and getting rid of them.
Allie pointed at Lily and gloated, “What else can that useless son of yours do apart from playing around with women? He only knows how to play and have fun every day. Even if you gave him a fortune, he would lose all of it. Why would anyone want an incapable person like him to manage the company? Who else to blame except yourself for giving birth to such a useless son?”
Lily was about to retort when she heard Cayden say to Jeffrey, “Grandpa, Kendrick is learning to manage the company now. He's brilliant and makes fast progress. Plus, he's now working in the sales department. Wait for him to mature a little more, and I'll let him manage the entire sales department.”
Jeffrey nodded in satisfaction. “All right. You two are brothers, so you should love and help one another. Kendrick is very playful. As his older brother, you must be more proactive and teach him.”
“Yes, Grandpa.”
The sales department was the literal core of every company. For Cayden to hand over such an important department for Kendrick to handle, Jeffrey could tell that Cayden regarded Kendrick highly.
Jeffrey's biggest wish was to see the family at peace and his two grandsons joining hands to manage the company.
As for his two daughters-in-law, he knew they would never be able to mend their relationship. He only hoped they would stop arguing and turn a blind eye to whatever either of them had done.
Lily finally calmed down after hearing Cayden's words.
Allie did not understand business, so she stopped trying to stir up trouble.
All of a sudden, Cayden casually said something that made Allie mad. “Grandpa, Mom, Avery and I have already registered our marriage, and we're here to inform you about it. We'll start preparing for the wedding when the child is born.”
“What? Cayden, you... Did you and this vixen really register your marriage?” Allie jumped from the couch. She was livid. “That's impossible! Where did you get the household registry?”
Cayden wrapped his arm around Avery's shoulders as he glared at his mother. “That's none of your business. Mom, Avery is now your daughter-in-law. There's no use objecting to it.”
Jeffrey glanced at Avery's protruding stomach once more. He furrowed his brows when he heard Cayden say that. However, he sighed, and his expression softened. No one knew what he was thinking.
