Chapter 598 Jealousy
The mansion suddenly plunged into a deathly silence.
Jeffrey knitted his brows but kept mum. He knew even if he were to hide the household registry away, his grandson would still find ways to retrieve it if he wanted to register his marriage.
He had always wanted to interfere in his grandson's marriage, just like how he did with his son Bruce in the past. He wanted to arrange a marriage that would benefit the family business.
However, Jeffrey was aware that Cayden was a strong-willed individual with dominating traits, unlike his cowardly father, and thus, it would be challenging to manipulate him.
Additionally, Cayden had established himself as the new business titan of the younger generation, while Jeffrey himself was aging and becoming more frail with each passing year.
At that point, Jeffrey had come to the realization that it would be beneficial for his grandson to marry Avery, as he now held the belief that a married man would exhibit more responsibility.
If he continued to get in the way of their marriage, it would only fuel Cayden's rebellion since he and Avery had already had three children together.
Since things had come to this point, he decided to let nature take its course!
Allie sensed something was wrong when she noticed Jeffrey's silence.
Clenching her aching chest, Allie glared at her son and reprimanded, “Are you trying to drive me crazy? Even if you marry her, I'll never acknowledge her as my daughter-in-law. So forget about it! Cayden Moore, if you don't want to drive me to my grave, you'd better go to the city hall and divorce her immediately!”
Upon noticing the hatred in Allie's eyes, Avery could not help but feel disheartened.
She knew Allie had never been fond of her, but she never imagined her animosity toward her could be this intense. She took me away from my biological mother the moment I was born and made me live a dreary life. I don't understand why she had such deep hostility toward me. And she didn't even want to spare the life of a newborn!
Feeling Avery's unease, Cayden held her close and spoke firmly to his mother. “I won't divorce Avery. If you can accept that, then we don't need to argue. But even if you don't approve, it won't change the fact that we're married. Avery is my wife, and I won't let her go.”
Allie's finger trembled as she pointed at Cayden and Avery. “Cayden, are you willing to cut ties with your mother for this girl? She's just an ordinary girl. Why are you so obsessed with her? Don't you know she's a jinx? If you marry her, she'll drag you down with her sooner or later. You have a bright future ahead of you, so why can't you start a family with another woman from a wealthy family?”
Cayden stared at his mother with an impassive expression. He then stood up and walked up to her. “Mom, there's something I want to ask you. Let's talk in private.”
Allie scowled at Avery before storming upstairs with Cayden.
“Lorraine, I'm tired. Help me back to my room,” Jeffrey grumbled, too angry to even acknowledge Avery's presence. With the assistance of the housekeeper, he made his way back to his room.
At that moment, only Avery and Lily were left in the spacious living room.
Lily's gaze flickered to Avery's belly. The cold glint in her eyes could make everyone uncomfortable.
Just when Avery was about to speak to defuse the tension, Lily said sarcastically, “You may look fragile, but it seems you are quite fertile. Do take good care of this baby, okay? Who knows, it might be just the key to securing a hefty inheritance for you in the family!”
Avery cradled her belly protectively, looked into Lily's eyes, and said calmly, “I've no idea what you're insinuating. All I know is that the child inside me is my precious baby, and I only want it to be healthy and happy. I don't seek anything beyond that.”
Lily's lips curled into a sneer as she let out a cold laugh. “Your mother-in-law once knelt before me like a dog and made the same promises, pledging to be a dutiful wife to Bruce and swearing off any desire for what I possess.”
As Lily recollected the past, her mind began to spiral into a frenzied madness. “She stole my husband, took away my rightful place in the family, and her son even deprived my son of what was rightfully his. And now, do you plan to take away everything from my grandson with this unborn child of yours? Well, we'll see if you can deliver it safely!”
Her gaze resembled a blood dagger, slowly and painfully severing Avery's nerves.
There was also something sinister about the baffling smirk on Lily's face.
Seeing Lily's dazed state, Avery could not help but take a few steps back, fearing that she might harm her unborn child. “You're overthinking. Something like that will not happen, I assure you.”
Upon noticing the terrified expression on Avery's face, Lily suddenly regained her usual composure.
She gradually got up from the couch, gracefully straightened her clothes, and walked up to Avery.
Just when she was about to touch Avery's belly, Avery instinctively stepped back.
After missing the target, she let out a cold smirk and pouted. “What's wrong? Are you afraid I'll harm your child? Although I'd love nothing more than to skin Allie alive, your child is innocent, so don't worry. Moreover, we're in the Moore residence. I can't do anything to you, anyway. But I must say Allie is one lucky woman...”
With that, Lily muttered something under her breath and hummed a melancholic old tune as she ascended the stairs.
Avery caressed her stomach. Her encounter with Lily sent a chill down her spine.
She could not help but wonder if Lily's mental state was stable. I should speak to Kendrick about his mother's current state and ask him to pay more attention to her. The consequences could be dire if her condition deteriorates.
While Avery was contemplating Lily's bizarre demeanor, a loud bang on the door upstairs startled her. Allie's wailing voice pierced through the silence as she shrieked in between sobs. “Get out!”
Next, she heard Cayden's footsteps.
Avery stood up and was about to go upstairs, but before she could climb the steps, she saw Cayden coming down with a distant expression.
Before she could react, Cayden approached her, held her hand, and uttered in a suppressed voice, “Let's go.”
Allie stood along the corridor upstairs and watched them leave.
She cried bitterly and cussed loudly, “Cayden Moore, even if I have made mistakes, I am still your biological mother. How could you side with an outsider and question me? Since you insist on trusting an outsider over me, we should just cut ties. From now on, you're no longer my son. Get out of here! If you dare set foot in this house again, I will break your legs!”
Avery turned around and glanced at the tear-streaked face of Allie. She then asked the man, who was walking ahead of her. “What happened? Why did she throw a fit?”
Cayden remained indifferent. Despite listening to his mother's heart-wrenching cries, he did not even bother to turn back.
Like a robot without emotions, he held Avery's hand and stepped out of the house, his mind replaying the conversation he had just had with his mother.
He finally found out why his mother had switched Avery at birth. But...
Overwhelmed by a bitter feeling, Cayden shut his eyes, not knowing how to tell Avery the truth.
The reason behind Avery's unfortunate life ultimately came down to his mother's jealousy.
