s nothing I want more in this world than for you to forgive me… Lassa.”
Thalassa’s heart squeezed painfully at the affectionate name he’d used. It was a nickname many close to her called her, but there had been something special about the way he said it–a certain raspiness and breathiness that made her weak in the knees.
The last time he’d called her by that name was four years ago when they’d been happy, before they got married, and he changed into a completely different man.
Glaring at him, she gritted out coldly, “Do not call me that again, Mr. Miller.”
Kris swallowed, feeling the frostiness in her tone, knowing this was going to be just as hard as he had expected. But at least she’d given him some kind of reaction. Her anger was far better than her indifference.
He risked a step forward. “Thalassa, I know that I’ve hurt you more than any man ever has, and…”
“Any man?” Luisa scoffed. “Try anybody.”
Now Kris knew this was going to be ten times tougher with Luisa present. Dragging in a deep breath, he corrected himself, his gaze still on Thalassa.
“I know that I’ve hurt you more than anyone has ever hurt you, and I don’t even know where to begin apologizing.”
“Maybe start by apologizing for treating her like trash throughout your marriage! All the times you called her a gold–digger and a slut,” Luisa butted in again. “Or when you threw her in jail. Or maybe when you refused to believe her when she told you she was pregnant and still went on to divorce her and kick her out of your life in the middle of the night! The list is endless.”
Kris felt his frustration and desperation mount even higher but he knew he couldn’t fault Luisa. She’d spoken nothing but the truth.
“For all of it. I regret every one of those things. Every single wrong I did against her,” he answered, feeling his throat tighten. 1
While Luisa fumed, she didn’t say anything more. Kris looked at Thalassa, his heart in his mouth as he waited for her to say something.
“Okay,” she finally said and immediately turned towards her car, but Kris was quick to grab her by the arm.
“No. You can’t just say that and walk away. Please say something,” he pleaded.
Thalassa’s eyes glared down at the spot where his hand was wrapped around her arm, her gaze hardening.
Kris?”
“What do you want me to say,
“Anything,” Kris said desperately. “Shout at me. Call me the most idiotic person in the whole world, but please, say something.”
“I said all that I had to say the last time we spoke in my office when you showed me those pictures. Do you remember what I told you before you left?”
Kris brought his hand up, running it lightly through his hair. “Thalassa-”
“Tell me what I told yoù on that day, Kris,” she demanded, her hard eyes never leaving his.
Kris pursed his lips for a few seconds before reluctantly answering, “You told me that… that if I ever regretted

everything I’ve done to you, not even begging for your forgiveness would be enough to make you forgive me.”
Thalassa’s lips stretched into a tight smile as she jerked her arm from his hold. “You said it so perfectly, which means you clearly remember. So, what are you still doing in front of me saying all those things?”
Kris felt like a pin had punctured the little bubble of hope he’d had, and it kept getting smaller and smaller.
“Thalassa, please…” He tried to take her hand into his, but she immediately pulled it out of his reach as she lashed out.
“What makes you think that you even have the slightest right to stand in front of me and ask for my forgiveness? What makes you think you’re even worthy of that?”
“I’m not. I know I’m not, Thalassa,” Kris croaked. “I know I’m not worthy of receiving anything from you because of how much I hurt you, much less your forgiveness. Heck, I know I don’t even deserve to breathe the same air as you, but please… I was a complete idiot for not trusting you like I was supposed to and for hurting you because of all the lies I believed about you. But you don’t know how much I regret—”
