Mum, can you leave us alone? I need to speak to Karen about something, then I’ll drop you off at the office,” Kris finally said, surprising them both. 

“Leave you two alone?” Linda asked nervously. “Why?” 

“There’s just something I need to discuss with her, and I’d prefer if you left us alone.” 

“Okay,” Linda nodded. “I’ll be in the waiting area. Don’t take too long.” 

She looked at Karen. “Goodbye, Karen.” 

To Karen, that goodbye held a thousand warnings, making her swallow nervously as she watched Linda leave. 

“What did you want to talk to me about?” she asked Kris. 

Kris stepped closer to the bars, his gaze intense and his voice dangerously low as he spoke. “Thalassa recorded the conversation you had when she came to see you. You told her that my mother was behind everything that happened to her. What evidence do you have to prove it?” 

Even though Linda wasn’t present, her earlier threats were still engraved in Karen’s mind, making her shake her head. 

“I have no evidence because it was all a lie.” 

Kris’s eyes darkened with fury. “If it was all a lie, then why would you accuse my mother of such vile things? What is wrong with you?” 

“Because Thalassa told me to,” Karen said. “She promised to get me out of jail if I told her everything your mother had done. She was so convinced, and that’s why I decided to tell her what she wanted to hear, hoping she would actually get me out of here. But she tricked me. She even made me beg for her forgiveness on my knees. All that time, I saw her recording.” 

“So, my mother had nothing to do with anything that happened to Thalassa, like you claimed?” Kris questioned. 

“No.” 

Kris felt like the weight that had been pressing down on his chest had been lifted, but that didn’t dissipate his anger as he stared at Karen. 

“That means it was you. You planned all of that against Thalassa. You sent that man to attack her. You killed our unborn child.” 

“No, that’s not true!” Karen panicked. 

As much as she was willing to do what Linda asked, she wasn’t willing to take the blame for the death of Thalassa’s unborn child, something that was so brave and serious. 

“I swear I had nothing to do with it.” 

“You were the only one who knew she was pregnant,” Kris sneered, his nostrils flaring. “The night she told you to tell me the truth about her pregnancy, you said she was lying even though it was true. That attack on her was meant to make her lose the baby. Who else could have sent that bastard if not you?” 

Karen felt like she was caught between a rock and a hard place. She couldn’t betray Linda again by telling Kris the truth, but how could she get out of this without being made to pay for something she didn’t do?
