"Can you believe it? Right after Perdita was whisked away, the new assistant swooped in to fill her shoes!" Nyssa said, her voice laced with disbelief. "You didn't know?"
"..."
Truth be told, she was in the dark.
Returning to her office, Dorothy was about to dial HR to get the lowdown when her fingers, already poised over her phone, hesitated and dialed a different number instead.
After a couple of rings, the call connected.
"Yeah? What's up?"
"That tone—do you even need to ask?" Dorothy could almost picture the wry smile in his voice, confirming her suspicions. "Why didn't you tell me about the assistant situation?"
Everett chuckled deeply from the other end, "And if I had, would you have let me assign someone? Come on, you're pregnant. I didn't take over your job as the boss outright, consider that a favor."
Dorothy couldn't help but laugh, exasperated.
"I thought we had an agreement not to meddle in each other's work?"
"But you also said, as long as I agreed to have another child, I get to call the shots," Everett's voice teased, growing playful. "What, reneging on your word now? Having a change of heart because the baby's not here yet?"
Dorothy chuckled nervously, "No, no, of course not."
"Good." His voice softened a bit. "And about the new assistant I assigned to you, he's quite capable. Anything you're struggling with, feel free to consult him!"
Frowning slightly, she replied, "Got it."
Ending the call, Dorothy stood and made her way to the assistant's office.
Inside, the new assistant was efficiently sifting through documents and compiling reports, having even completed a financial comparison chart sent over by a project company!
Taking a look at the document, the assistant said, "It's not just about high valuations; you have to consider the tax situation and the actual financial health of the company!"
"Have you encountered similar cases in your projects before?"
"Sure! There was one project where we—" He cut off abruptly, catching Dorothy's amused smile.
"..."
"You seem to have quite the experience with projects."
"Ha... Well," the assistant laughed awkwardly, attempting to steer the conversation back, "I was assisting the project team! Yeah, that's it!"
"Then you must know what I used to do at the Lopez Corporation, right? I was an assistant."
Understanding the extent of an assistant's capabilities, Dorothy was all too aware.
