The doctor chuckled as he spoke, "Don't worry about the baby's skin being so red now. In my experience, kids like this end up having the fairest skin when they grow up! She'll definitely take after Mrs. Lopez."
"That'd be wonderful... just wonderful!"
Everett reached out to hold his daughter, but his arms seemed to disobey him, awkwardly positioned in every which way!
"Place your hand here, ah, yes! Lift your right arm a bit, there!" The doctor patiently guided him and, when that failed, simply assisted in positioning him correctly.
Finally, the tiny infant was securely cradled in his arms.
Whether it was a true blood bond or not, the wrinkled little baby opened her eyes in Everett's embrace!
She scanned her surroundings slowly and then—suddenly started to cry!
"Waa...waaah..."
Hearing the noise, Karen rushed in from outside!
Seeing the infant in Everett's arms, her eyes immediately welled up with tears.
"She's finally here! Dorothy made it through!" She looked up at Everett, "Is it a boy or a girl?"
"..." He was so overwhelmed with emotion, he had forgotten to ask.
The doctor, standing by with a smile, announced, "It's a girl, a precious little girl!"
"A girl, that's great." Everett instantly said, "A girl like Dorothy."
Karen, observing how he held the baby, frowned in mild disapproval, "You don't have to be so stiff, those big hands of yours are more than enough to support her! She won't fall."
He stood there, looking like a robot, afraid that even breathing too heavily could cause him to drop the child.
"New dads are always like this."
The doctor, having seen this scene unfold many times before, found nothing unusual.
Karen glanced inside, "How much longer before Dorothy can come out?"
"Honey, you did great."
"I'm out!" Dorothy waved at them before finally reaching to hold Everett's hand, "It wasn't tough at all! I was chatting with the doctor, and before I knew it, she was born."
Of course, he knew she was just trying to comfort him.
"Let me see our daughter." Dorothy found his way of holding the baby amusing.
Everett leaned in, placing their daughter beside her, "She suddenly cried a while ago, but after I rocked her a bit, she fell asleep again. Very calm, very obedient."
"Newborns tend to fall asleep quickly."
Dorothy placed her gaze on the infant, and despite having been a mother before, couldn't help but marvel, "She's so tiny..."
Her hands, her head, all so small.
Karen leaned in, giggling, "I saw her open her eyes earlier, wow, such big, deep double eyelids! Looks like she got them in the womb, Dorothy, just like you!"
