Everett's eyes darkened.
"I'll figure out a way to get my mom to accept Dorothy."
"No way in hell, son! Your mom is hell-bent on Heather. You heard her in the hospital, didn't you?"
Everett glanced towards his bedroom, "There's got to be a way."
He just hadn't thought of it yet.
Jonathan stayed quiet for a good while before he finally muttered, "Earlier, Heather pulled me aside and suggested that you two could pretend to be together in front of your mom. That can at least stabilize her condition! I'm not okay with lying to your mom. I’m afraid the truth will come out someday. But if you insist on not breaking up with Dorothy, then what Heather said is the only solution for now. Think about it."
With that, he hung up.
Everett stared at his phone screen. His thick eyebrows furrowed deeply.
He knew full well that persuading his mom would be next to impossible. Only a stalling tactic could solve the problem for now.
But he couldn't shake off an ominous feeling.
...
Perhaps exhausted from Everett's demands, Dorothy was sleeping soundly.
When she woke up the next day and saw the ceiling of Bay Residence, it took her a good while to recognize where she was.
She got up, freshened up, and walked out of the bedroom.
Everett, in his white home-wear, was typing away at his computer at the dining table. He was communicating about some company matters with his brows slightly furrowed.
A steaming hot breakfast was almost ready in the kitchen.
She hoped the moment could last forever.
Hearing the noise, Everett looked over, "Hold on, we can eat soon."
"About how popular you were back in junior high."
He paused, seemingly unaware of his own charm, "I guess I didn't really pay much attention to that."
"You are showing off."
Everett walked over with a serious expression, "I'm not showing off. But there's something important to discuss."
"Alright, spill it." Dorothy stopped smiling and looked at him, "What's up?"
"About Heather." Everett took a long pause and decided to see what’s Dorothy's attitude towards Heather first.
That was only a show he staged in front of his mother, and he found it easy to hide it completely from Dorothy. But he didn't want to lie to her.
Dorothy's face changed instantly at the mention of Heather. Her expression tightened.
"Let me make one thing clear first. It's either her or me."

Why didn't Jeffrey call Everett from the office? Lock his door instruct security to not let anyone in and speak to Everett on the phone? Or send him a text giving him a quick summary of what's up and that he's on his way over. That way when he runs into Heather on his way out he informs her Everett already knows....
