Aurelia sighed inwardly, knowing the whole mess had started because of her lack of foresight.
Just then, Beverley walked in and said, "When Fredric and Sheryl were fighting, Joyce's name came up. You know, Aurelia and I are kind of superstitious, and we figured that all the drama between Fredric and Sheryl might be connected to Joyce's restless spirit. So we took Sheryl to this spiritualist. We thought a good wizard might help her apologize to Joyce and settle their feud. But who could have guessed she'd choose such a drastic way out?"
Lisbeth let out a sigh, "Sheryl must've been pushed to the edge by Fredric, huh? When people are on the verge of breaking, they can lose all sense of reason."
Aurelia replied, "Didn't Joyce end her life because Sheryl drove her to despair? What goes around comes around, I guess."
Lisbeth shot her a meaningful look, saying, "I heard from Sheryl that you know Joyce."
Aurelia nodded, downplaying her connection, "I met her once. She used a stage name. If it weren't for a little online digging, I wouldn't have known she was a classmate of my cousin."
Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Lisbeth mused, "Fredric's single now. When's your cousin going to step into Sheryl's shoes? Next time we hang out, let's invite her. It'd be nice to get to know her better."
Aurelia shrugged, "It's not even a thing yet. Fredric's got a thing for her, sure, but she hasn't said yes."
"What?" Beverley jolted, "Didn't they hook up? They're not planning to get hitched?"
"They were drugged," Aurelia explained.
As she spoke, Lisbeth flickered her eyes, her gaze dropping to her fingers.
Beverley gasped, "Who the hell with nerves of steel would dare drug Fredric?"
Aurelia handed them pieces of the peeled orange. "Fate is a funny thing. When it shows up, you gotta grab it with both hands. If you miss it, it might never come around again." Lisbeth said in a low and husky voice as if shattered by the rain outside the window.
"Maybe some people are meant to cross paths but not destined to be together. Even if they do get together, they might still end up apart."
Aurelia said firmly, "Our destiny is in our hands. Even if fate seems against us, true love can work miracles."
Beverley nodded vigorously, "Exactly! Look at Leopold and Aurelia. They were apart for three years, and had to divorce, but they never gave up on each other. Now they're back together, aren't they?"
Aurelia felt a twinge of guilt. In truth, she had given up on Leopold. When she left Elysium three years ago, her heart was in tatters. She never imagined they could reunite.
