Chapter 127
Aurelia heaved a silent sigh in her heart. Mr. Chad was notorious for his playboy tendencies, and his sons were likely to inherit a bit of that gene.
Arnold turned to look at her, a hint of affection in his gaze. “Aren’t you bored listening to us chatter?”
“Not at all,” she replied, shaking her head with a smile. “Gossip about the boss is always a tasty treat.”
Arnold laughed. “So, you’re a sucker for gossip, huh?”
Aurelia grinned, revealing her pearly whites. “Is Evelyn back because she wants to become the boss‘ wife?”
“It’s as clear as day,” Fredric shrugged. “Lately, our little brother has been taking her everywhere. Poor
Elowen is about to lose her mind.”
No wonder Evelyn was so bold and brash. She had someone fueling her confidence.
“Do you think the boss is going to break off his engagement with Ms. Elowen and get together with Evelyn?”
“He’s been known to make impulsive decisions for a girl before,” Fredric said. “Remember when our father arranged his engagement to Elowen? He ended up proposing to Megan at the Rose Party right in front of our father. Nearly gave the old man a heart attack.”
He took a sip of his champagne and continued. “I’ve got to hand it to our little brother, though. If he’s not actively trying to piss off our father, he’s planning his next move. If our father tells him to go east, he’ll go west. He never lets our father have his way.”
Aurelia took a deep breath, trying to wrap her head around the family politics. The boss must have been born with a grudge against his father.
No wonder he put so much emphasis on prenatal influence. He didn’t want his children to follow in his footsteps.
She would have to remember to think positively about the boss in the future. She didn’t want to negatively affect their children’s relationship with him.
Otherwise, if the children ended up constantly butting heads with him, he might grow to resent the children.
Arnold gave her a look that was difficult to describe. “If only he had shown our father a bit more respect, our father might not have fallen ill.”
Fredric chimed in, “Which prince doesn’t hope for the king’s early death so he can ascend to the throne? Besides, our father always favored you. He always talked about deposing him to make you the heir. Can you blame him for wishing for our father’s early demise?”
Fredric sighed. “The first anniversary of our father’s death is coming up. Jessica doesn’t seem to have made. any preparations. The Stirling mansion is quiet. I hope she’s not planning to just make a small memorial event and call it a day.”
Arnold said, “Jessica is too smart to let people talk. She’s not well, so she’s left the preparations to Elara.”
Fredric chuckled. “If Leopold doesn’t marry Elowen, Elara might just drop dead from anger.”
Aurelia quietly nibbled on a piece of fruit.
Elowen had lost to Megan before, and now she was about to lose to Megan’s sister. Poor girl.
From afar, Leopold’s grip on his glass tightened, his eyes were as cold as ice.
Aurelia felt like a lamb caught between two lions.
He wanted to pull her close, to keep her by his side.
But damn it, he couldn’t!
The Director of Public Relations came over to brief him on the gala’s proceedings.
Soon, the celebration officially began.
