In the next moment, both Ellie and the knife clattered to the ground.
Gavin looked at me in shock.
Then, as if realizing the gravity of what he had done, panic overtook him.
"Scarlett, it's not what it looks like—I just acted on instinct…"
But before he could finish, I interrupted him.
"Instinct is the truest reflection of someone's character. Don't worry, I'm fine. I trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu years ago, and I'm still strong."
After my paralysis, I hadn't had the chance to use those skills. Though a bit rusty, it felt good to put them into practice again.

I dropped my smile and stared at him coldly.
"Gavin, this is the difference between us."
"Your upbringing defines the scope of your thinking. My perspective was shaped by my family, while yours remains confined to the fields of a rural farm—feudal and outdated."
"We were never from the same world. I once believed our differences in mindset didn't matter, but now I see I was wrong."
Each word I spoke seemed to drain more color from Gavin's face.
Time stretched endlessly before he finally responded, his voice hollow.
"You're right. We're not from the same world."
"Let's divorce, as you wish."
Hearing those words, I finally exhaled, feeling a weight lift from my chest.
Later, Ellie Johnson was arrested and sentenced to prison for attempted assault.
The next day, Gavin handed me the signed divorce papers.
He looked like he had aged years overnight.
His once-dark hair was now streaked with white.
As I saw his signature on the papers, it felt as though all the shackles holding me down had fallen away.
We went to the marriage registry to finalize the divorce.
When the clerk asked if we were certain about ending the marriage, Gavin hesitated for a long time without saying a word.
Instead, he turned to look at me.
