Chapter 101
At 1:00 am sharp, Madison opened her eyes.
She got up, freshened up briefly, and sat in front of her streaming equipment. As soon as she opened the software, a request to join her live chat popped up. Madison clicked to accept.
Moments later, Vander Wills appeared on the screen
“We’re at the base of the mountain you mentioned, but the weather’s bad. The local search and rescue teams have already gone in.”
The rescue team, along with the police, had set up floodlights at the base. Some concerned villagers joined the search upon hearing the news. They were more familiar with the mountain than the rescuers.
A villager holding a flashlight approached and said in a thick local accent, “We’ve been coming to this mountain for years. If anyone were really up there, we would’ve found them by now”
Vander quickly thanked the villager, and his children followed suit. They even offered money as a token of appreciation.
The villager waved it off, saying, “I’m not doing this for your money. I just want you to know that the person you’re looking for isn’t here.
Vander’s expression dimmed, and his children gave a bitter smile. Deep down, they didn’t believe it either, but seeing their father’s hopeful expression, they couldn’t bring themselves to say no.
“Sweetie, I’m here,” a comment popped up..
“This is such a waste. The locals said there’s no one up there. Our sweetie must be mistaken!” another viewer replied.
“Exactly! They won’t find anyone,” someone else chimed in.
“Sweetie is wasting resources. The rescue team and villagers are out there for nothing. If she’s just guessing, I’m seriously going to lose it,” an angry viewer added.
Vander noticed the comments. He glanced at the dark, dense forest, then at the kind villagers in front of him. He watched the rescue team struggling up the mountain with their flashlights.
He wiped his face and forced a bitter smile. “You’re right. I can’t let my feelings waste the country’s resources.”
He knew in his heart that his wife couldn’t still be alive. He had seen her cremated with his own eyes.
Just as he stood up to call off the search, he heard Madison’s voice through the phone.
“Your wife is on that mountain. If you don’t find her tonight, she’ll die,” she firmly said.
Vander froze, staring at Madison on the screen. He could see her seriousness and concern.
“Is she really on the mountain?” he asked.
“Yes!” Madison replied with conviction. “Did you bring her things like I asked?”
you told
“Yes, we did. This is my mom’s favorite scarf.” Vander’s daughter pulled out a purple scarf. “And we also brought the candles y us to prepare.”
Madison looked at them and instructed, “Set the candles facing the mountain and burn the scarf.”
Vander’s children did as she said, while the villagers watched curiously.
Once the scarf caught fire, Madison took out a talisman and quietly chanted a few words. “Now, hold the burning scarf and walk
forward.”
