A man's voice came through the phone. "Did you get the documents? Just a heads-up. Don't use email or your phone to send it. How about you send me a toy, like a plushie, and hide the memory card inside?"
Paul sighed. "They let me go."
The line went quiet for a bit, and then the person on the other end shouted, "Why? You owe me an explanation!"
Paul cautiously replied, "It's because of her."
The voice on the other end got a lot more agitated. "Do you have any idea how much I've spent to build up your credential? I went through all the trouble to make you a top-tier candidate and even got two academicians to vouch for you. How could you throw that all away for a woman?"
Paul found himself drenched in cold sweat. "Apologies. I didn't think this would happen. I slipped up, and it won't happen again."
A scoff came through the line with a warning tone. "This time, I'll let it slide. But you'd better watch yourself from now on. Mess up again, and you're done. You know what that means."
Sitting in his car, Paul felt his legs turn into jelly. He knew what it meant to be cast aside. There was no saving himself after that.
He immediately pledged, "I'll be more cautious than ever. I swear it on my life."
The voice on the line coldly stated, "I'll give you one more shot since you're showing the right attitude. Keep working on it. You have to get Emily's research and findings."
How was Paul supposed to work on it? He furrowed his brows. "I've already been fired. I don't think I have a chance anymore."
