The Heiress’ Return: Six Brothers at Her Beck and Call (Wynter Quinnell) novel Chapter 1888

Reputation, by all logic, was something one earned. The cultivation world kept track of how many formations one had unraveled and how much merit one had accumulated.

Though they went by different names, every region had its renowned exorcists, but that didn't mean it couldn't be faked.

Some possessed genuine skill, while others were mere charlatans who knew nothing of fortune but were good at lying. They would swindle wealth, exploit desires, and even cost lives with their tricks. They prey on the gullible, convincing them to abandon reason.

Some claimed talisman water could cure illness instead of medicine, but that was utter nonsense. If it were that simple, life wouldn't have suffering and death.

So, Wynter approached these figures with skepticism. She'd seen enough liars in Riverburg.

There were families who blindly trusted a cultivator's words, like one who declared a child "a curse upon kin". Because of that, the girl endured abuse until she drowned herself in despair.

Atwater had told Wynter afterward that this was the cruelty of human nature. The so-called cultivator had merely played into the family's existing bias—a stepmother, a patriarchal household, and financial burdens—they had already been looking for a reason to cast the girl out.

Too often, people cloaked their malice in superstition, blaming "ghosts" to ease their guilt.

Was the issue with the Maynerd family something that occurred naturally, or man-made?

Wynter needed to see for herself before drawing any conclusions. She also had to figure out whether every fortune-teller who had come to the Maynerd family had arrived by coincidence or, like her, had some ulterior motive.

Delmar and the others entered the Maynerd family's villa. They had just stepped into the courtyard when they saw the Maynerd family's butler, Jett Graham, escorting a cultivator out.

It was clear that this cultivator was quite skilled. He held bracelets and wore a simple robe. Judging by the style of the robe, he seemed to have come from Foplya, his demeanor polite and humble.

Jett, seemingly unwilling to give up, asked again, "Is there really no way to help our young lady recover?"

The cultivator chanted, "Ms. Maynerd has always had a weak horoscope but a noble destiny. Even if we manage to keep her this time, it won't be for long. I still need to consult some ancient texts."

"Then let me see you out." Jett wasn't entirely unaware of the situation. Over the past two days, more than one or two cultivators had come, and most of them had said the same thing.

Three of the most renowned ones were still inside, but Jett wasn't sure if there was still hope. Thinking of Jules, who had always been frail, he shook his head. In reality, the word "hope" was little more than a psychological comfort.

Celestine had already grown noticeably thinner over the past two days because of Jules' condition.

If only they could find the woman who had returned Jules' soul that day... But after inviting so many cultivators, not a single one had mentioned the incident after seeing Jules.

"It's truly like searching for a needle in a haystack. How am I supposed to find this person?" Jett muttered to himself.

But one thing was certain—the person was a female cultivator. That was why the three cultivators remaining inside were two women and one man. For now, they could only take things one step at a time.

Jett sighed inwardly but didn't let it show. After all, the Maynerd family received many guests daily, and it wouldn't do to wear his emotions on his sleeve. The Maynerd family wasn't an ordinary household, and if word got out, it could lead to unfavorable rumors.

But he was distracted, so much so that he still hadn't noticed Delmar and the others when they were right in front of him. It was Delmar who greeted him first.
