The three cultivators were planning to give Dalton and Wynter another chance.
Otherwise, if they were to back out at the last moment, it would be embarrassing to talk about in the cultivator community. It would also be difficult for Dalton and Wynter to gain trust in the future when offering their services for residential consultations.
In Havenia, everything revolved around credibility and reputation. They weren't saints, and they still had to make a living. Aside from procuring artifacts, the most lucrative work for them was assessing the fortunes of homes and gravesites.
If Dalton and Wynter had just arrived in Havenia and were already trying to fool the Maynerd family, word would spread, and it would only harm their prospects.
Unexpectedly, the first one to react to this wasn't Dalton or Wynter. It was Delmar, who had introduced them earlier.
His expression was visibly tense, and he lowered his voice. "Mr. Yarwood, your health has only recovered this year. It's not suitable for you to face any evil spirits or underworld guards.
"Why don't we wait until the cultivators have handled the situation before coming back? It's not urgent enough that we have to see Driscoll today."
Delmar was genuinely worried. This wasn't about meeting just any ordinary unborn souls. To be honest, even ordinary unborn souls would scare the living soul out of him.
The moment he heard about evil spirits and underworld guards, Delmar practically wanted to grab Dalton and Wynter and leave immediately.
Wynter noticed his concern and smiled. "We're actually quite happy to have the chance to meet the underworld guards."
Jensen let out a cough and thought to himself that it wasn't as if Wynter hadn't met enough of them already. After all, she was a cultivator who dared to take on the entire underworld alone.
Jensen imagined for a moment that if the underworld guards really did show up later, they'd probably regret their appearance the second they saw Wynter and Dalton.
The three cultivators, however, didn't see it that way. They felt they had already done their part by advising them. If something really went wrong later, it would be beyond their control.
Just then, a deep voice came from the stairs leading to the second floor. "I'll have to trouble you all again today, esteemed cultivators."
The speaker was none other than Driscoll, a man of immense influence in Havenia.
He wasn't wearing his uniform, and though his bearing was extraordinary, the exhaustion on his face was unmistakable. There were dark circles under his eyes, a weariness that couldn't be hidden no matter how hard he tried.
Jett, who had gone upstairs earlier to inform him, now followed him down the stairs. "Mr. Maynerd, these are the two acquaintances brought by Mr. Humphry."
Even if Jett hadn't said anything, Driscoll would have immediately noticed the two strikingly remarkable young people. Their presence here almost seemed out of place.
But when his gaze landed on Dalton's face, he paused, as if suddenly recalling something. Then, his attention snapped back to Delmar.
"This friend of yours, Mr. Humphry… is he from Kingbourne?" Driscoll's tone carried a hint of probing, noticeably different from his usual demeanor.
Wynter could tell he had recognized Dalton. She had just raised an eyebrow when Dalton responded, "Yes, I'm from Kingbourne."
Given the position Driscoll held, he was undoubtedly far sharper than most.
The Yarwood family, as the nation's guardian lineage, would never have their head travel to Havenia without some prior notice.
Normally, even if they didn't inform the authorities, financial reports would still pick up on it. After all, certain moves by the Yarwoods often signaled upcoming shifts in capital trends.
Among the few domestic angel investors capable of countering foreign capital, Dalton was undeniably ranked first.
With the current chaotic state of affairs, Driscoll, who was well-versed in economics, had originally planned to visit Colifernia when he had the chance. If he could meet Theo in person, they could have a proper discussion.
Going to Kingbourne, however, would be too reckless given his position and would undoubtedly draw attention. On the other hand, Colifernia itself was close to Havenia, so his visit wouldn't raise too many eyebrows.
But then Jules' incident happened. The amulet he had previously obtained was damaged and could no longer serve as protection. He simply couldn't spare the time to go to Colifernia now. He feared that if he left, Jules might truly be lost in an irreversible coma by the time he returned.
"Welcome to Havenia." Driscoll shook Dalton's hand with deliberate firmness. He knew that if Dalton had come in this manner, he must be keeping a low profile.
But as the host, he couldn't help but feel relieved that, in such turbulent times, someone from the mainland had arrived.
And it wasn't just anyone—it was Dalton, who commanded a vast capital. This meant that no matter what economic turmoil Havenia might face, there would now be someone to provide a safety net. The thought eased some of the tension in Driscoll's chest.
The three cultivators, however, couldn't help but murmur inwardly at the way he treated Dalton. They felt like he was acting differently toward Dalton.
Driscoll seemed to realize this as well and withdrew his hand, returning to his usual composed demeanor. He had worn a uniform for years, yet unlike the bureaucratic air of mainland officials, his presence carried a deeper, more tempered gravity.
It was clear he had an impeccable upbringing, and his posture suggested he had spent a long time in the military.
Men like him, whose very presence made even malevolent spirits retreat, usually never had to worry about supernatural disturbances. So, why was the Maynerd family still plagued by such incidents?
This was something Wynter found puzzling. She decided that when she actually met Grim and Vesper later, she'd have to question them properly. After all, when it came to the underworld's matters, those two were the ones who knew best.
"Please, everyone, have a seat. I can't help but want to chat a bit more when I meet talented young individuals. I hope the three of you won't take offense."
They were being paid to resolve a crisis, so they naturally wouldn't mind such details from their employer. Instead, they all praised Driscoll for his appreciation of talent.
Driscoll's manners were impeccable. Every gesture and movement of his reflected his education and upbringing. In this regard, he bore some resemblance to Dalton.
Wynter curled her lips slightly, glancing at the elegantly aloof man beside her.
Dalton, unaware of her thoughts, tilted his head slightly, causing the strands of hair at his forehead to fall. His striking handsomeness made it hard to look away.
It wasn't just the three cultivators questioning their capabilities—even Wynter herself, when she first met him, hadn't believed he hailed from the underworld as the so-called Spirit King.
Someone like him really wasn't suited for catching spirits. He belonged more in an executive chair, signing billion-dollar contracts.
Driscoll still didn't know Dalton's true identity. After waiting for everyone to take a sip of tea, he said, "It's quite late today. Mr. Humphry and... this friend from Kingbourne, would you like to rest in the guest room on the second floor? There are some family matters I still need to attend to."
Soon, the cultivators would begin their rituals, and strange occurrences might follow. He didn't want to startle Dalton, nor did he want private affairs to spread. After all, such matters were far too bizarre for ordinary people.
But to his surprise, Dalton spoke again, his voice calm and measured. "There's no need for concern, Mr. Maynerd. My fiancée and I came specifically to handle your family's affairs."
Even someone as composed as Driscoll couldn't help but widen his eyes slightly. He turned to look at Delmar, who gave him a firm nod.
Driscoll shook his head. "Mr. Yarwood, the Maynerd family's situation is far from ordinary—"
