Vera disdainfully withdrew her arm, speaking in an indifferent tone. “I’m no longer young, so my diet needs to be light. I have a nutritionist who plans my meals. There’s no need for any of you to cook for me.”

She then turned to look at Raylee. “You should go on your own, dear. I won’t accompany you.”

“I’m not going either. I want to stay home with you, Grandma,” Raylee said, resting her head on Vera’s arm.

“All right, if you don’t want to go, then don’t go.”

With a smile, Vera affectionately ruffled her hair.

When she looked at Waverly, her demeanor turned cold again.

“We’re not going. You go ahead.”

Watching the affectionate interaction between the two, Waverly couldn’t help but feel a surge of jealousy.

She wanted to keep the incident at the swimming pool a secret, fearing it might upset Vera.

Waverly wanted to continue speaking, but upon meeting Raylee’s gaze, she was startled into a shiver. With teary eyes, she said, “Okay then. Raylee, Grandma, I’ll be heading back now.”

“What swimming pool incident? What happened?” Vera asked anxiously.

“The ring just fell into the swimming pool. Nothing else happened. Don’t worry about it, Grandma.”

“You gave me quite a scare, Kay–Ray. If something’s really going on, you need to tell me. I won’t let anyone bully you.”

Raylee nodded in agreement.

Vera continued, “Why don’t you go tomorrow? Otherwise, who knows what that sly girl will do to scheme against you. She might even try to drive a wedge between you, your parents, and your brother!”

Raylee shook her head. “Let her be. But Grandma, it seems like you don’t really like her, do you?”

“Remove the ‘seems like,” Vera said indignantly. “She’s been back for four years, yet she’s never treated me with any respect. There was a time when I was hospitalized and my caregiver had taken a leave. She bravely volunteered to take care of me. I lost control of my bladder and bowels, and she was utterly disgusted. She even cursed me behind my back, wishing I would just die sooner rather than later. She thought I was asleep and couldn’t hear her, but in reality, I saw her true colors very clearly. Although she’s indeed my granddaughter by blood, she has a wicked heart!”

Raylee had not expected that Waverly had such a history with Vera.
