Jack was clearly shaken by the look on Emily’s face.
He stammered for a long time but couldn’t explain a thing.
For whatever reason, Emily picked up her chopsticks and sat back down.
But her hands were trembling.
The chopsticks slipped from her fingers and hit the floor with a sharp clack.
Everyone looked at me with a mix of sympathy, shock, and curiosity.
Everyone except Emily.
She couldn’t bring herself to look at me, like facing it would make it real.
After a long, awkward silence, I decided to break it myself.
I gathered my things and walked over to Mr. Johnson.
“Mr. Johnson, I’ve worked on quite a few projects in the past.”
“I’m actually really interested in the one you’re handling now.”
“Would you mind sharing your contact info?”
“I can send over my portfolio and some case studies.”
The moment I stepped into that restaurant, I already had a hunch why I’d been invited.
Mr. Johnson’s recent projects had all been handed off to Alan.
But the results were underwhelming–so today, they were clearly considering someone new.
This was my shot.
Mr. Johnson was a little surprised, but politely gave me his contact and told me to stay

I gave a small smile, thanked him, and was ready to leave.
But as I passed by Alan, he suddenly reached out and grabbed my arm.
“I swear, I didn’t know what happened that day.”
“You’re not gonna hold it against me, right?”
Alan stood there in his tailored blazer, clean–cut and polished.
He even tried to look sincere when he spoke.
But I wasn’t Emily.
“What if I do hold it against you?”
“What are you gonna do–bring my daughter back to life?”
Ishook off his hand.
Maybe I used a little force, but I didn’t expect him to fall to the ground.
Alan yelped, clutching his knee like he was in serious pain.
Emily snapped out of her daze and rushed over to help him up.
But she didn’t stop there.
She ran straight at me.
“Lucas, stop right there!”
I kept walking, but she caught up and grabbed my arm.
She forced me to turn and face her.
