"I had snubbed you the last time we met, and yet you helped me without holding a grudge. Are you just that magnanimous?" Regina's words carried a tang of bitterness. She couldn't contain her feeling of disappointment, nor could she understand why she felt this way.
"Ms. Tanner, I don't just help anyone who comes knocking," Nolan said. "We clicked, and from our previous encounters, I could tell you're not the type to give someone the cold shoulder without good reason. Plus, if I had turned a blind eye after witnessing what happened, I'd be no better than those who ignore a friend in need. And, well, the prospect of partnering with the Tanner family has come up, so think of it as doing your old man a favor."
Regina looked up, surprised, her mouth opening and closing without a word. She hadn't expected that reason.
Nolan was far from sincere. Ever since that gala he attended, he knew he couldn't consider partnering with such a company, let alone spout such nonsense about 'schedule prospects'.
"Mr. Harris, I really am thankful," Regina said, taking a deep breath and plastering a smile back on her face. "But how should I repay you? I can't just accept your kindness without offering something in return."
"No need for that; it was just a small favor," Nolan said, waving his hand dismissively, yet he frowned upon hearing Regina's insistence.
Her smile shone brighter. "But how can that be? We aren't exactly bosom buddies, are we?"
"If you're set on returning the favor, then promise me one thing," Nolan offered after sipping his beer.
Regina perked up. "What's that?"
"Promise me you'll stay out of the developer's business. It's not as straightforward as you think."
"Is it really that dangerous? Seems like I'm on the right track then. Ablett’s family sure seems pitiful, being forced out like that. I wonder how many tenants were bullied into leaving."
Regina's voice dripped with sarcasm. The developer had once been lauded for smoothly handling the tenants, even landing a few interviews. But in the end, they had used such underhanded tactics.
"Don't worry, if they're at fault, I won't let them off the hook. This is on Harris Group, too. We failed to do our due diligence before the handoff. That's our mistake. I, on behalf of Harris Group, will see that the residents get the justice they deserve."
With Nolan putting it that way, Regina was at a loss for words. She wasn't ready to give up on her investigation, but it seemed she might not have much choice.
