"Since you have given me your word, I've got nothing to worry about, Mr. Harris. I bet Ablett will be over the moon once he hears the news."
Regina folded her arms, portraying the look of someone who had reluctantly agreed not to meddle further.
But Nolan knew she wouldn't just fall in line. "Let me remind you one more time, Ms. Tanner, don't you try snooping around that developer. If anything untoward happens, no one will be able to save your skin."
Nolan's voice was stern, compelling Regina to nod obediently.
"Alright, you've made your point, and I'm not one to court danger. I've asked all I wanted, and you've given your answers. So, let's leave it at that." Regina was quick on her feet, stuffing her papers into her bag and marching out.
Nolan remained seated, chuckling to himself. It had been a long time since anyone had dared to leave before him.
Only Regina had the guts to pull that off. Just before she exited, she turned around with a knowing smile.
Nolan was puzzled.
"You might not realize it, Mr. Harris, but when you're feeling guilty, you always fiddle with your fingertips. Glad to have made that little discovery. Ta-ta!"
Without a backward glance, Regina departed, leaving Nolan alone to ponder the meaning behind her last remark.
Regina strolled out of the café, feeling invigorated despite Nolan's less-than-pleasant responses. She figured she had his measure now.
At least the man was sincere in his assistance, not just offering a helping hand for the sake of some cooperation with the Tanner family or out of respect for her father.
