I smiled calmly and asked in a nonchalant tone, "What's with the pretense, Abigail? Isn't this what you want? Isn't this what you're trying to achieve by calling me back? You just want to humiliate me with this, right?"
I smiled bitterly, feeling deeply humiliated.
However, standing before Abigail, I had no choice but to endure it. The children would only be spared if I let her have this satisfaction.
In a furious fit of rage, she grabbed the glass of red wine from the table and splashed it on my face.
The pungent smell of alcohol hit me all at once, causing me to go into a coughing fit, and my stomach churned. My nose was filled with a strong metallic scent. It took me great effort to suppress the nauseous feeling.
She stared at me gloomily and scoffed. "Weren't you the one who claimed not to care about anyone? I'm surprised that someone like you, who was able to abandon me so easily when I was your girlfriend, is now willing to lower yourself for the sake of someone else's children. You're so pathetic and despicable that it's revolting!"
She held my wrist tightly with one hand. My skinny and sickly body felt as though it could collapse from the slightest breeze.
Even though I was being held down by a woman, I had no strength to resist.
She dragged me along and threw me onto the couch. Towering over me, she mocked, "I've long lost interest in you, Samuel. Right now, my biggest thrill is watching you struggle helplessly in front of me and begging for mercy on your knees!"
I didn't know how to calm Abigail's overwhelming rage.
I could only stare at her blankly. With great difficulty, I forced myself to ask, "What do I need to do for you to spare those children and give them a chance at life?"
Abigail bore into me with her burning gaze. Suddenly, she grabbed my wrist and dragged me out.
"Come with me. If you can so much as improve my mood in the slightest, I might consider your request."
