"Oh, by the way, the gift I prepared for Tom is in the bedside drawer in our bedroom. It's a tie. Could you bring it along as well?" Abigail texted me, urging me to hurry.
I agreed and went to the bedroom to retrieve the tie. When I saw the packaging box, I found myself momentarily lost in thought.
Abigail often bought me gifts when we were together back then. The most expensive gift she had ever bought me was a tie from this brand. It cost 18 thousand dollars for a single piece.
I was completely stunned when I found out the price before I immediately urged her to return it. There were better things to do with that amount of money.
However, she shook her head and smiled gently as she said, "What's the big deal? You're worth a gift this expensive to me! I'll give you even more precious gifts in the future!"
Those words warmed my heart as I knew her feelings for me were genuine back then.
But now, this gift no longer solely belonged to me. She could go out of her way to buy the same brand of tie for another man as a welcome gift for his return to the country.
It felt as if someone else had discovered the secret that once belonged to only the two of us. It was no longer a secret anymore when a third person knew about it.
I held the gift in hand and drove to the hotel.
This hotel was one of the ventures Abigail's company had invested in, and she was a frequent visitor.
I got out of the car and stood at the entrance for a long time before I snapped back to reality when Abigail called. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself.
The lively chatter in the private room immediately died down when I stepped in. All eyes were instantly fixed on me.
