Lana was a child who understood things far beyond her years. She knew who truly cared for her and how to make people happy.
From the moment she had first met Abigail, Lana had sensed that Abigail was a cold and distant woman.
As the saying went, the squeaky wheel got the grease.
Having grown up without parents, Lana had no choice but to please those around her. This survival instinct had shaped her into someone who always sought to win others' approval. So, she had developed a people-pleasing personality.
Even though Abigail didn't particularly like her, Lana still managed to coax a smile from her.
"Samuel, you're back," Abigail said gently, glancing at me with a soft smile. "Look at Lana. She's so sweet and adorable."
Lana held out an apple, her big eyes fixed on Abigail. In a soft, childish voice, she said, "Abigail, you should have some too!"
Abigail chuckled softly. "No, I don't want any. I'll cut it for you instead."
Her voice was gentle in a way I had never heard before. For a brief moment, I felt as if I didn't know Abigail at all.
She had never spoken to anyone with such tenderness. Yet here she was, visiting Lana with me and soothing the child with such warmth. Her transformation was startling and confusing.
Given Abigail's usual personality, she had indeed changed a lot recently.
"Samuel, Abigail, have you both been really busy lately?" Lana asked, her voice filled with innocent curiosity.
Surprised, I replied, "Busy? No, not really." Then, I asked gently, "Why do you ask, Lana?"
Her lips quivered, and she whispered, "It's just… you haven't visited me in so long. I've really missed you both."
