Hearing me mention the past, Sophia's expression softened, and she lowered her head, avoiding my eyes.
I let out a soft chuckle, trying to lighten the mood. "You don't need to worry about me so much. Honestly, I've gotten used to all of this. It doesn't affect me anymore."
I leaned back, giving her a faint smile. "Gossip doesn't hurt me like it used to. At this point, I have my career, and I'm financially secure. As for love? It's not something I care about anymore. It's irrelevant."
Sophia's eyes filled with concern as she looked at me. Her lips parted like she wanted to argue, but after a moment of hesitation, she simply sighed.
"Well," she said softly, forcing a smile, "as long as you're okay, that's what matters."
Then her expression turned more serious. "But, Samuel... I have to ask—what's the point of dragging things out like this? You and Abigail, it's clear there's no real love left between you two. At this point, isn't it just mutual torture? Staying together like this only hurts you both."
Her words hit a nerve. Sophia had always been outspoken about her thoughts on my relationship with Abigail, especially when we almost divorced. To her, staying together seemed senseless.
She shook her head and murmured, "You deserve so much better."
Her unwavering support warmed me. Knowing someone understood me and was on my side gave me the strength to keep going. It reminded me that even in the darkest moments, I wasn't entirely alone.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a red car pulling out of the lot. The driver had long, dark hair and wore sunglasses. From this distance, it looked eerily like Abigail.
My heart skipped a beat. Without thinking, I stood up and strained to get a better look.
But the car sped off too quickly, and I couldn't make out who was behind the wheel.
An unsettling wave of anxiety washed over me. Abigail had always been suspicious of my interactions with Sophia, especially after Sophia took my side during one of our more explosive fights. Abigail had made it clear—she didn't want me meeting with Sophia, whether it was work-related or not.
