I forced myself to suppress the bitterness and unease churning within me as I picked up the fork and took a bite.
At that moment, it felt as though I couldn't taste anything at all. Every bite of food felt unbearably bitter, leaving a hollow, aching emptiness in my mouth.
After taking one mouthful, I handed a piece to Abigail. She seemed genuinely delighted by my gesture, her eyes brightening as she clasped my hand, her smile brimming with warmth.
"Samuel, I knew it! Deep down, you still care about me. I knew you wouldn't just abandon me," she said softly. Her gentle voice lingered in my ears.
I lifted my gaze to meet hers, staring at her indifferently for a moment before finally breaking the silence.
"Abigail, it's true that I was wrong to break things off with you and leave the country without a word back then. But haven't you punished me enough over all these years?
"I can't take it anymore. You keep torturing me like this, and I feel as if I'm suffocating, unable to breathe. I'm begging you. Please give me a chance—a chance to leave you, okay?"
My words were honest, heartfelt, and painfully sincere.
But Abigail stared at me with a stern expression, as if I had just said something utterly outrageous. She didn't respond, instead remaining silent as though intending to counter me with her silence.
Taking a deep breath, I locked eyes with her, my voice growing firm.
In the past, I would've immediately tried to appease her, doing everything I could to make her happy and keep her from feeling hurt. When Abigail was upset, I felt weighed down by guilt and pain.
However, I realized I had to keep going. I had to lay everything bare, say everything I'd kept bottled up, and bring this to an end. Otherwise, Abigail's pretense of ignorance would only continue to suffocate me.
"You've never loved me, have you?" Her sudden words came with a heavy breath, her gaze sharp and filled with accusation.
"That's not what I said, Abigail," I replied calmly, my tone measured yet unwavering. "When we were together, I loved you deeply. Back then, I thought I was the luckiest man alive to be with you. I truly believed we could spend the rest of our lives together in happiness.
"But everything shattered the day you brought another man home. That's when I realized it was all an illusion. You never loved me. You were only with me to exact your revenge."
