Blair's response left me feeling a little unsettled. Her level of concern went far beyond that of a typical friend.
Sophia, who'd been watching from the side, seemed equally perplexed, her eyes sharp with irritation and suspicion. Women had a keen sense for these things. She must have felt a strong sense of intimidation around her.
"Thank you for your offer, but this is something I need to handle myself," I said politely, declining Blair's help.
The issues between Abigail and me were numerous. No matter how things ended, it was something we had to work through on our own. Involving anyone else would only change the situation's nature.
"After all, Abigail is still my wife on paper," I added.
The words seemed to sting Blair. She gave a small, bitter laugh and shook her head. "You're right. Since you two are still married, I'd just be meddling."
A tense silence followed, each of us lost in thought. The sound of my own heartbeat was almost audible.
The food arrived quickly, but Blair barely touched hers. She excused herself after a few bites, saying she had something else to do, and left.
Sophia stayed quiet for a long while, finally looking up at me with a cautious expression. "Samuel… Don't you think Blair was acting strange?"
"What do you mean?" I asked without thinking.
She bit her lip, sounding almost jealous. "It just seems like she's way too interested in you."
I knew what she was getting at. But I didn't have the time to consider why any woman might be taking an unusual interest in me right now, or what her intentions might be.
