Amy’s brows knitted together, her face a canvas of bewilderment and hurt. “Why am I not good enough? Old Mr. Hunter, didn’t you say that no girl would ever like Noah? Well, here I am, telling you plainly that I have feelings for him. Why won’t you accept me?”
Josiah’s voice was stern and unyielding. “It’s not about liking or disliking. It’s because you’re not a girl–you’re a woman.”
Amy was baffled. She asked, her confusion evident, “Aren’t girls and women essentially the same? Isn’t it just a matter of terminology?”
To her, both were simply women, with only a minor distinction in name.
Josiah, however, was relentless. “Girls are innocent and pure in both body and soul. Women, on the other hand, have had their bodies tarnished. And you, Amy, with your heart so cruel and your ways so frivolous, I do not doubt that your body has been tainted by another man.”
“I don’t care if a girl has lost her virginity or not,” Josiah continued, “but a tainted heart is what concerns me. Amy, when Sam was reduced to a fool, I am well aware of your actions toward her. How could I ever allow my grandson to marry someone like you? What if, one day, in a moment of anger, you harm me or abuse me?
“I am too old to endure the turmoil of a granddaughter–in–law like you. Even if Noah can’t marry Sam, his future bride can never be you–not ever.”
Amy was left speechless.
She had never anticipated such harsh words from Josiah. Her face turned crimson with a mix of shame and fury. “Old Mr. Hunter, how could you speak of me this way?”
Josiah’s disdain was palpable. “Have I said anything untrue? Your heart is as dark as it gets.”
Amy’s desire to escape was overwhelming. The harsh judgment of this old man would be met with retribution someday. She vowed to make him regret this cruel humiliation.
Across from her, Samantha observed the storm brewing in Amy’s eyes. Her concern grew as she wondered what nefarious plans Amy might be scheming. Could she be contemplating an attack on Josiah in response to his words?
If Amy did act on such thoughts, Samantha feared the depths of her malice. She considered it might be wise to warn Josiah to protect him from any potential harm Amy–might inflict. Josiah, sensing he might not have provoked Amy enough, issued a stern warning to Noah.
