As Samantha held the apple Elain had handed her, she instinctively glanced at Elain’s hands. She noticed the deep calluses on her thumb–calluses that usually developed from prolonged use of a knife. 

Although Elain was a senior, she shouldn’t have had enough time with a surgical knife to develop such deep calluses. Samantha’s suspicions grew even stronger. 

“Didn’t you say earlier that we’re going to the press conference hosted by the police tomorrow?” Samantha asked, trying to steer the conversation. 

“Yep, that’s right. Why? Are you thinking of going, too Elain replied casually. 

Samantha shook her head. “I’ve got a head injury, and my body is aching all over from the fall. I doubt the doctor will let me leave the hospital, so you should go on without me, Elain. I’ll just stay here and catch up 

on the news.”

“What can you tell from these images?” he asked. 

The doctor pointed to a specific area on the back of Samantha’s head. “Ms. Wallace has a hematoma here. Fortunately, it hasn’t affected her vision, but it appears to be compressing something other than the optic 

nerve…”

“Like what?” 

“Her memory. I once had a patient who had a similar situation. He didn’t lose his sight, but the pressure from the hematoma caused him to suffer from temporary amnesia. Because the location was particularly dangerous, surgery wasn’t an option, so he still hasn’t regained his memory.”

“Are you saying my wife might forget me because of this hematoma?”
