The doctor was momentarily taken aback by Finley’s question. He looked at him, unsure of how to respond. “Mr. Dean, seeing the woman you love not remember you is undoubtedly painful, but if you make an effort to help her remember, that’s what matters, right? Do you know what it’s like for someone with Alzheimer’s? As the disease progresses, they forget many things and their mental faculties regress to that of a child, eventually reaching a state of complete dementia.” 

The doctor paused before adding, “But do you know what? Even when their mental capacity is diminished, many memories stick with them–the most profound ones. Just like your wife, even if she forgets, it doesn’t mean she has lost everything. If she truly loves you, then even if she forgets, she might fall in love with you all over again.” 

Finley frowned. “Are you really comparing my wife to an Alzheimer’s patient?” 

“I was just making an analogy,” the doctor replied cautiously. 

“Do you think my wife’s situation is similar to that of an Alzheimer’s patient? Are you sure you’re qualified to make such statements?” 

The doctor felt cornered by Finley’s sharp words, unsure how to respond. 

Taking a deep breath, he finally spoke, “Mr. Dean, perhaps my earlier comments were poorly phrased. I intended to give you some perspective. In short, your wife’s amnesia is likely temporary. She won’t forget for long, and rest assured, she will recover one day.” 

Recover one day? 

Finley felt that the doctor’s words were nothing but empty comfort. 

“If you can’t articulate your thoughts better, then just be quiet!” 

With that, he stormed out of the doctor’s office, leaving the doctor staring after him, at a loss for words. 

What did I do wrong? 

Why has Mr. Dean suddenly become so furious? 

All I spoke was the truth. His wife is genuinely showing signs similar to Alzheimer’s, and the hematoma in her brain could potentially lead to that condition. 

Returning to Samantha’s hospital room, Finley saw her munching on apples. He approached her and asked, “Why are you eating so many apples?” 

“Elain had nothing to do, so she peeled a bunch for me Samantha explained. “I’ve eaten so many I’m full. Do you want some?” 

Finley looked at the empty apple peels in the fruit basket. He took the half–eaten apple from her hand. “If you can’t eat anymore, then stop. Did Elain force you to eat all of these?” 

Samantha shook her head. “No, it wasn’t like that. I wanted to eat them, especially since you bought them. I didn’t want to waste them.”
