Finley sat beside Samantha, watching her eyelids grow heavy. “Are you tired?” he asked gently.

“Then you should rest. I need to step out for a bit to buy some toiletries for the hospital. Is there anything you’d like to eat?”

She cast a weary glance at him, her eyelids heavy. With a barely audible murmur, Samantha said she didn’t want anything before settling into bed and quickly drifting off to sleep. 

Finley tenderly brushed his fingers over her injured forehead. Leaning down, he pressed a gentle kiss on her brow before leaving the room. 

As he stepped outside, he ran into Elain, who was holding a fruit basket she had just bought. Finley looked at her coldly. “What’s this?” 

She flipped her hair and answered shyly, “This is a fruit basket I specifically bought for Samantha. I noticed her basket was empty, and since she’s injured and can’t go out, I thought I’d bring her some fruit. After all, she’s my lifesaver.” 

Finley opened the basket wrapped in white paper and noticed it was filled with apples. “My Samantha just ate a bunch of apples. I doubt she can manage anymore right now. And you’re injured too, so why don’t you take this basket back to your room and eat it yourself?” 

“Oh, I see.” A hint of disappointment flickered in Elain’s eyes. “Then I’ll just go out later and get Samantha some other fruit.” 

“No need for that. I can get her whatever she wants. But I have to ask, how come you when Samantha was hurt so badly? Didn’t you both fall from the cave together?”

Elain didn’t catch on to the fact that Finley was probing her; she thought he was concerned for her well- being.

“I fell first, and then Samantha followed. I passed out when I landed, and when I woke up, I found myself tied to a stone bed. I only sustained injuries from the fall, but the killer hasn’t done anything to me- Samantha’s in much worse shape. She not only fell but was also injured on the back of her head. She’s got all sorts of bruises, and I even heard the doctor say she might lose her sight or memory.” 

Seeing Elain’s sad expression about Samantha’s condition, Finley placed a comforting hand on her back. “Don’t worry. I won’t let anything happen to her. I’ll take care of her and protect her.” 

Elain’s eyes filled with gratitude at Finley’s words.
