" Hey, you look stressed out, are you okay?" Sunny asked her boyfriend as he entered the house.
" I'm fine...is there any food around here, 'm starving." he walked past her.
"Sunny?!" he called startling her.
" Is there any food in this house goddam it?!" he raised his voice at her again making her flinch.
" Please don't hit me," she murmured.
" Yeah, there's, there's some pasta on fire...let me go check it and serve you your food," she answered shaking as she hurried past him to the kitchen. Her hands were still shaking as she took the food off the fire and dished Keith's food. She set it on the table with a bottle of root beer. Keith stood in front of the kitchen observing his girlfriend. She seemed so scared and was shaking the whole time.
I shouldn't have screamed at her.
He walked closer to her and put his hands on her waist making her flinch again.
" Please, please don't hit me." she repeated again as he let go of her. He turned her to face him. She had her eyes closed as he held her wrists gently.
" Sunny, open your eyes," he softly added but she didn't.
" Babe, please," he begged. He could still feel her shaking.
" Who hits you or who used to hit you?" he asked her letting her hands go.
" Your food is served." she sobbed running past him to her room. They both had different rooms in the house but most at the time she was always in Keith's room. She locked the door and sat in the corner crying her eyes out. He had made her remember something she had buried deep within.
She was a victim of abuse when she was younger, she was weak she used to get beaten and bullied by every member of her nuclear family. Her aunt was the one who took her away from those people and brought her to Jersey City, NJ to live with her.
" Sunny," Keith knocked on the door. She didn't want him to see her in a mess so she didn't open the door no matter how long he knocked. She lay on the floor sobbing and she didn't realise the time she fell asleep.
Her tummy grumbled waking her up from her sleep. She checked the time and it read 8:00 pm. She had slept off for three hours. She unlocked the door to her room and was about to head to the kitchen when she saw Keith fast asleep beside her door.
She gently tapped him awake. " You need to go and rest, you've got work tomorrow." she shook him again.
" No, I need to apologise to Sunny, I hurt her," he murmured in his sleep.
"Keith, wake up." she shook him harder as he opened his eyes and sat straight.
" Hey, are you okay?" he asked.
" I'm fine, go get some proper rest," she said walking away to get some food to eat. She put the leftover pasta and meatball sauce in the microwave to warm it up and got herself a can of raspberry soda. She stood humming 'IDER'S Mirror' as she drummed her fingernails on the counter in sync with the beat playing from the radio.
"Do I really laugh like that?
Do I speak? Do I move? Do I look like that?
I can't remember what I'm good at
(Heal me, heal me, heal me, heal me)
Where you at? Where you at?
(Heal me, heal me, heal me, heal me)
Where you at? (Heal me, heal me, heal me, heal me)
I keep looking in the mirror
'Til I see myself, I see myself, eh
Hey lover, will you blow my cover?
'Cause I'm not myself, I'm not myself
I wake up in the middle of the night
And I look like a stranger in the bathroom light
I, I keep looking in the mirror 'til I see myself
