Evelyn's reaction was somewhat intense. Despite her calm expression, the instinctive resistance and the motion of swatting away Lucas' hand were purely out of reflex.
Lucas paused.
In the warm orange glow, his dark eyes were cold yet deep. He didn't miss the subtle changes in Evelyn's emotions. He withdrew his hand and said, "Alright, you cover yourself up."
Turning away, Lucas sat down on the leather couch nearby. He reached for a cigarette, but as he brought the lighter to his lips, he furrowed his brows and returned the cigarette to its pack.
Evelyn didn't refuse the medicine. She tossed the pills he brought into her mouth, followed by a gulp of water to swallow them.
But Lucas noticed she didn't touch the sour gummies on the nightstand.
After all, they had been married for three years, and Evelyn's health wasn't exactly great. She often suffered from headaches and fevers. Whenever she took medicine, she would hesitate for a long time. She hated the bitterness, the dryness, and the difficulty of swallowing it.
To take a single pill, she would often need to have several pieces of dried fruit or candy.
But just now, she didn't even glance at the sour gummies. She simply took the pills without batting an eye.
When did she become so indifferent to the bitterness?
Evelyn's head was heavy, but she still had the ring on her mind. She looked at Lucas directly and said plainly, "I came back today to discuss something with you. Can you sell me the ring?"
Only then did Lucas lazily look at her. "Sell?"
Evelyn, not understanding his meaning, gripped her hands tightly and said urgently, "I'll pay whatever price it takes!"
"Do you really think I need your money?" Lucas' lips curved in a slight sneer, his eyes as dark as ink.
Evelyn's heart skipped a beat, but before she could speak, the door was pushed open and Maria entered softly, asking, "Is Evie feeling better?"
When she saw that Evelyn had woken up, she visibly relaxed. "Evie, are you still feeling unwell? Lucas came back last night and said you had a fever and that he couldn't wake you up."
