The Queen Returns—And She's Unforgiving novel Chapter 264

Evelyn had just finished recording her fingerprint.

Hearing the staff's question, she raised her head, her expression calm and indifferent. "It's voluntary."

Lucas glanced at her, his gaze lingering on her emotionless expression. She seemed more resolute and at ease than she had ever been before, especially with a subtle urgency that he couldn't ignore.

His eyes stayed on her for a moment longer, but he looked away, giving a slow nod.

The staff observed that neither of them showed any emotional reaction. There was no shouting, no heated argument. They seemed like strangers handling the necessary paperwork to resolve a bothersome issue.

Once the system confirmed the fingerprints and identity details were entered, the staff then stamped the documents.

At this sight, Evelyn felt a faint tremor in her chest, as if her heart had been shaken. Memories of her marriage, both good and bad, flashed through her mind like vivid images—each one etched deeply into her consciousness. It felt like a storm brewing inside her heart.

Her past longing for Lucas' love had now turned into a yearning for freedom, to break away from the endless waiting that had only imprisoned her. No matter which phase of her life she looked at, it had cost her something—time, emotions, and sacrifices.

It wasn't until she held the divorce certificate in her hands, her ties with Lucas officially severed, that her heartbeat finally began to slow down.

Evelyn didn't spare him another glance. She didn't wonder how he was feeling, nor did she care if he looked relieved or regretful. Whether he was smiling or sulking, it didn't matter anymore.

She was done caring.

She opened her purse and put the documents away. While she was organizing them, a few papers slipped out and fell to the floor.

Just as she reached down to pick them up, Lucas had already bent over, his left hand helping her gather the folded papers.

His gaze flicked over the top of the papers, and his eyes landed on words printed on one of them. "Excision surgery…"

He didn't see the rest, but it was clearly a document from the hospital.

He paused for a moment, then looked at her. "Did you visit your uncle?"

Evelyn immediately snatched the paper from his hand, her face sharp with a hint of bitterness. "Mr. Grant, please don't invade other people's privacy," she said, her tone firm, her gaze cold.

It was especially so, now that they were no longer married!

She didn't elaborate or answer further. Of course, Lucas' question was understandable. Leonard had been hospitalized and was soon to undergo liver removal and a transplant.

It was natural for him to make such a connection.

Evelyn quickly gathered her things and, without another word, walked away, her back straight and distant.

Lucas watched her retreating figure. He caught a glimpse of her pausing by the door. She was looking at the divorce certificate, and the frozen expression on her face seemed to thaw in that instant. She gave a faint smile, but it was so fleeting that even he couldn't discern its meaning.

He couldn't look away at that moment.

Morgan approached him and spoke, breaking the silence. "Mr. Grant, do you want to see Ms. Reed off? She doesn't seem like herself today."

"No need." Lucas sounded indifferent, showing no interest in escorting his ex-wife.
