The Connor family's sip-and-see party was very grand. The guests who came to congratulate them just kept coming.
The Connors were an eminent family. On top of that, they were related to a top, wealthy family like the Grants. It was only natural that the party attracted a lot of guests.
When Evelyn came upstairs, Tessie was welcoming the guests. Once she saw Evelyn, she waved with a smile and said, "Why are you alone? Where's Lucas?"
"He's parking the car downstairs. He'll be right up," Evelyn answered with a slight smile. She handed the gifts to Tessie and said, "These are a little something from Lucas and me."
Tessie accepted them happily. "It's enough that you guys are here. Maria's health is gradually declining, so she has sent the both of you to liven the party up."
She led Evelyn in by her arm as she spoke. Then, she asked the baby's father, Samuel Connor, to bring the baby over.
Evelyn was dazed for a moment as she looked at the gorgeous baby. She could not help but smile, and her gaze softened.
Tessie handed the baby to her. "Do you want to learn how to carry a baby?"
Evelyn was a little nervous as she had never held one before. However, she still nodded in the end.
She carefully held the baby in her arms, and the gentle and soft feeling made her melt. She could not help but caress the baby's cheek.
Lucas stumbled upon that scene when he came upstairs.
Evelyn did not have an aggressive character, but she was a little cold. So, she hardly ever looked as gentle as she did at that moment.
Lucas walked over and moved his gaze away from Evelyn. "Aunty Tessie. Samuel."
Samuel patted his shoulder in response.
Pretending to blame Lucas, Tessie said, "Look how much Evie likes children. When are you guys going to have one of your own? Maria would be so happy."
"We're the same age, Lucas. I'm 29 years old, and I already have my second child. Shouldn't you put on some speed?" Samuel teased.
Lucas put on a faint smile and said nothing. He was not interested in a topic like this.
Tessie and Samuel had long heard that Lucas and Evelyn were not getting along, even though they looked fine on the outside. Seeing Lucas' attitude left them feeling helpless. Why was their relationship just not improving?
Evelyn understood what Lucas meant. He didn't necessarily dislike children—he probably just did not want to have one with her.
