That way, if anyone ever tried to accuse Gavin and Yvette of stepping over the line, they could brush it off by dismissing those critics as "folks with twisted imaginations who find fault in every little thing."
But Steven kept that thought to himself. Instead, he watched Gavin with calm detachment. "If you want Yvette to be more than just a friend in your life, maybe you should consider actually dating her."
If Gavin couldn't bring himself to cut ties with Yvette, chances were Sherry wouldn't forgive him either.
"Maybe you and Yvette would be a better fit after all," Steven said matter-of-factly.
The tears that had been building in Gavin's eyes froze. He stared at Steven, completely thrown.
"I'm not into Yvette!" he snapped.
Steven's tone sharpened. "And yet you've let your girlfriend get hurt because of her, haven't you? Doesn't that tell you Yvette matters more to you than Sherry does?"
Gavin went quiet, his silence lingering.
Steven didn't back down. "If you can't figure out what you really want, you're going to end up losing everything."
He delivered that final line and turned to leave, but Gavin grabbed the hem of his shirt. "Don't go. You're the only one I have left by my side. Stay a little longer. Please?"
Steven let out a heavy sigh before sitting back down.
"Why does Sherry keep fixating on Yvette?" Gavin demanded. "If anything were going on between Yvette and me, would Sherry have even stood a chance?"
Steven thought Gavin was being willfully blind. "And yet now she's the one who's moved on while you're the one who's unhappy."
Gavin shot him a sharp look. "Whose side are you on, anyway?"
The question took Steven by surprise. After a moment, he replied, "Yours, always. But think about it. If Sherry had a guy friend she spent time with every day, just like you do with Yvette, would you be okay with that?"
