For all the years Gavin had been with Sherry, the topic of marriage had never been brought up. Even so, he'd always thought their relationship worked just fine.
Sherry never pressed him on it, either. She gave him nothing but understanding and patience, backing every choice he made without question, her faith in him steady and unshakable.
In many ways, it was because of her that he'd become the man he was today—someone who could hold his own.
Even if the spark between them had dimmed over time, it had settled into something more profound, a steady, almost familial connection. The idea of life without Sherry had never even occurred to him. He couldn't imagine ever wanting that.
Maybe someday, Gavin told himself, when he'd gotten used to the rhythm of their life and the fear of marriage had loosened its grip, it wouldn't be so bad to make things official. But it had never crossed his mind that Sherry might be the one to grow tired of waiting first.
A thin layer of tears clouded Gavin's vision.
As for Yvette… To him, she wasn't any different from Steven. Both were the kind of friends Gavin called for a good time or when he needed someone easy to be around. Even the occasional closeness between him and Yvette didn't carry much weight in his mind.
Gavin was aware that their dynamic might sometimes blur the lines, but there was no harm in it as long as he didn't feel anything for her. Still, it was clear not everyone saw it that way.
Tears flowed from Gavin's eyes.
…
Sherry had just stepped out of the elevator when she noticed Sasha hanging around in the hallway.
She gave Sasha a curious look. "What are you doing here?"
Sasha flashed a sly grin. "I thought you'd be itching to vent about those two jerks. Lucky for you, I live for gossip. So, what's the tea?"
