As the cab came to a halt in front of the Selby Family’s house, their neighbor happened to be taking out the trash. When the neighbors saw a car stopping outside, they stood by the roadside to stare at it. The old man from the house next door seemed to recognize Cindy, for he greeted her the moment she stepped out of the car. “Cindy! It’s you! You’re finally home.”
She greeted him with a wide grin on his face. The old man then noticed the man beside her. “This is… He’s…”
Cindy slipped her arm into Ian’s as she introduced him. “This is my boyfriend. I brought him home to meet my mom.”
The neighbor seemed rather shocked upon hearing Cindy’s words, but he then took a good look at Ian before commenting, “Oh, it’s your boyfriend! He’s not local, is he?”
She nodded. “He’s not from around here.” It was too dark for the old man to see Ian clearly, and the old man rarely went on the Internet, so he didn’t recognize Ian at all. The old man simply nodded while mumbling a few ‘okays’ to himself.
Hazel had already heard the noise outside her house, so she rushed to open the door as Cindy and Ian brought their luggages into the house. “You guys are finally here!”
“Hello, Mrs. Selby.” Ian greeted Hazel in an extremely polite tone. She looked at him for a few moments before nodding. “Come in.” The dining table had already been set up inside the house. Although Hazel didn’t seem too welcoming, she still managed to prepare the necessities for her guest. It was clear that she had prepared extra dishes just for Ian—the dining table was practically full of food.
After Cindy and Ian put their luggage aside, Cindy got Ian to wash his hands before having his meal. Ian didn’t appear too reserved as he acted naturally around Cindy’s mother. While Hazel sat in the living area and waited for Ian to wash his hands, she called Cindy over in a hushed tone. “Is he reliable?”
Cindy pressed her lips together. “He’s been reliable so far. I know you’re worried, so I brought him home for you to take a look.”
Hazel glanced at the bathroom from the corner of her eye as she continued to speak in a whisper. “He does seem pretty decent, but aren’t you worried about dating a man who looks like him?”
Humans, in general, shared pretty similar judgments when it came to one’s attractiveness. Although there were some nuances among their opinions, most of the public would agree that Ian was an attractive man. Hazel, too, seemed to have shown her approval toward him.
“It hasn’t been a problem so far. At least he hasn’t used his good looks to do anything inappropriate,” Cindy replied with a smile. Hazel pursed her lips. “Is he from a rich family? Although celebrities earn a lot, I heard that they also spend quite a bit. Furthermore, I hear that their careers peak at a young age. Does he have enough savings now?”
That was the question that Hazel cared about the most. Cindy didn’t get a chance to reply to her mother’s question, for Ian happened to walk out of the bathroom after he was done washing his hands. Hazel had no choice but to swallow the rest of her words.
Hazel stood up and urged the couple to have dinner, but Ian insisted on passing Hazel the gift that he had prepared. It was rather troublesome for him to pack anything heavy for the long trip, and Cindy had reminded him that Hazel was one who valued practical items over luxurious ones, so Ian had purchased some health supplements after he got off the flight at the local airport.
After taking the gift, Hazel nodded and thanked Ian. She maintained a rather neutral demeanor the whole time, but Cindy wasn’t surprised by the way she acted. The three of them were halfway through their meal when Hazel started asking Ian about his work. She didn’t know much about his career as a celebrity—all she knew was that they made a lot of public appearances and interacted with plenty of people.
Ian gave direct responses to all of Hazel’s questions, and he seemed especially sincere since he didn’t bother to hide anything. Hazel paused after asking a few questions, and she hesitated for a while before continuing. “How much do you celebrities earn in a year? I heard that being a celebrity gives you quick money, so I’m really curious about this. How much, exactly, do you guys earn?”
Cindy hung her head low and focused on her food. She simply pretended as if she didn’t hear her mother.
