The runaway groom novel (Irene and Isaac) novel Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Irene had hit Whitney so hard that her palm was numb, and her eyes were filled with fury. “You’re a doctor. You know that an amniocentesis to a mother in early pregnancy will cause a miscarriage. A slap is a lot less than what you deserve!”

She would not be this merciful if anything were to happen to her twins! On the other hand, Whitney had never ever suffered such indignation and humiliation her eyes went red as she snarled, “Irene Spencer!” However, she had barely raised her hand when someone caught her wrist, and she turned to find Zachary watching her.

“W-What are you doing here?” she stammered.

Zachary shoved her aside. “Did you think you could do anything you want if I’m not around?”

“She hit me first!” Whitney cried, pointing at Irene. “Can’t you see my face?”

It turns out that Zachary had seen Irene do it, but he had also heard their entire conversation. “You were trying to hurt her baby, weren’t you?”

Whitney could not say anything to that, and turned furiously to glare at Irene. “Don’t get so full of yourself!”

Once she left, Irene’s nerves finally eased, but Zachary was staring at her. “What happened to you? How did you get pregnant? Was it Isaac?” Irene shook her head. “No.” “Then who’s the father?” Zachary’s voice became louder, but he quickly noticed his own agitation and lowered his voice. “You don’t even have a boyfriend-how did you get pregnant?” Irene hung her head. “Don’t ask.” “How could I not? You’re pregnant without getting married, so are you raising your child alone? Just tell me who it is. Did they dump you? I’ll help you!” Zachary exclaimed.

He was actually surprised that Irene was pregnant, because she had always been conversative and preserved her integrity.

And yet, here she was, pregnant out of wedlock. “I don’t know,” she said, and despite always finding it hard to talk about that night, she did not keep it from Zachary. “Isaac and I are married in secret, but there’s no love there. My father just wanted a connection to his family, and the Jeffersons could not refuse–my grandfather had once saved Henry, and my father used that debt as leverage.”

Zachary was not at all surprised, as he had already sensed that something was unusual when he found out that Irene was acquainted with Isaac.

He also knew that Irene’s father had always treated her harshly, but had never imagined that she would be forced to be Isaac’s wife!

“Well then, how did you actually get pregnant?” Zachary asked. “…” It was once again something hard for Irene to talk about.

“Were you raped?” Zachary realized that he was out of line after asking, and quickly explained, “Wait, I don’t mean…”

“No.” Irene, however, was not upset. Despite the harshness of it, she could not deny that she had made a mistake.
