“And another thing, I’ve had enough of you. Even if Sophie is an illegitimate child, that’s a matter for the Duke’s estate. It’s none of your business!”

Diana lashed out with her whip. Matthew barely dodged in time, narrowly avoiding a strike to his face. Furious, he shouted, ” Are you out of your mind? Do you want to kill me?”

Holding her whip firmly, Diana narrowed her eyes and said coldly, “You’re right. The affairs of the Duke’s estate are none of my concerns. That’s why I’m here today, not just to teach you a lesson, but to settle another matter as well.”

Matthew scoffed, still oblivious to the gravity of the situation. “Oh, so you admit it’s none of your business. What else could you possibly need to settle then?”

It wasn’t until Diana spoke that Matthew finally realized the seriousness of her words and regretted his latest remarks. With a wave of her hand, a servant stepped forward and handed Diana two items.

Without even glancing at them, Diana tossed the items to Matthew and said coldly, “This matter is very much mine to resolve. After all, I’m here to break off our engagement.”

The crowd outside the Duke’s estate froze in shock, their eyes wide as silence fell over the scene. Matthew froze for several seconds before finally speaking, disbelief written all over his face. “You… You’re here to break off our engagement?”

Matthew let out a bitter laugh, his anger barely contained. “Diana, are you seriously joking about something like this?”

He admitted his earlier words might have been a bit harsh. But Diana’s reaction seemed overly dramatic. Using the threat of breaking off their engagement as leverage was something not to be taken lightly.

Benedict was equally stunned. He instinctively tried to intervene. “Diana, don’t act on impulse. This matter-”

“I’ve already made up my mind, Benedict. There’s no need for you to try and stop me.” Diana raised her hand, cutting him off

mid–sentence.

Her gaze, filled with disappointment, turned to Matthew. “I didn’t want to bring this up so soon. I thought you might still have a chance to prove me wrong. But unfortunately, Matthew, you’ve let me down too many times.”

Time and again, he defended Sophie, even to the point of making her sister suffer. If he could treat his blood relative like that, what chance did she, an outsider, have?

If she were to marry Matthew and join the Duke’s estate, would she have to live under Sophie’s thumb for the rest of her life?

Matthew’s eyes flicked to the ground, where the engagement rings lay. It was real. Diana wasn’t joking. A wave of panic surged through him, though it was quickly overshadowed by anger. “Are you out of your mind, Diana?”

Matthew shouted angrily, “All this because I stood up for Sophie? You think that’s worth ending our engagement?”
