491.Chapter 491
“Caleb, you are so pitiful. Your uncle is so heartless. It’s all my fault. I can’t even speak up in my own home, let alone protect you,” Adeline sobbed, holding Caleb, who was already bandaged, and wept uncontrollably.
“Mother, it’s not your fault. It’s mine for not listening to you,” Caleb cried, clinging to his mother.
The mother and son sat on the floor, their wailing causing headaches for Gabriel and the others.
Sophie, caught in the middle, was extremely embarrassed. She had genuinely not expected that Matthew and Anthony would attack Caleb on the day of her visit.
Moreover, their actions were so brutal, breaking his leg and attempting to poison him. Their reckless behavior had ruined her chances of a good life at the Marquis’s estate in the future. They were truly fools.
Sophie was as regretful today as she had been delighted during her visit yesterday. If she had known that Matthew and Anthony would attack Caleb, she would have preferred that Caleb not accompany her back.
Those two fools wouldn’t have caused such a huge mess, and she wouldn’t have been implicated.
But now that the damage was done, Sophie could only try to salvage the situation. “Madam Nevill, the floor is cold. Perhaps you and Dale should get up,” she suggested.
“Shut up,” Adeline snapped, turning her head sharply and yanking her hand away from Sophie’s. “Who do you think you Do you have any right to speak here? Get out of my sight.”
Adeline’s outburst immediately irked Matthew. “Adeline, this was done by Anthony and me. We’ll take responsibility for our actions. There’s no need to take it out on Sophie,” he said.
Adeline and Caleb were sitting on the floor to make a scene, while Matthew was kneeling as punishment from Gabriel. Anthony was supposed to be punished as well, but he had claimed a relapse of his old illness last night, saying he couldn’t bear it and needed to go back.
Gabriel had let him leave, planning to inform him of any consequences later. After all, punishing Anthony was impossible at the moment, and with his injuries, he couldn’t kneel anyway. It was better to let him go.
Gabriel’s handling of the situation enraged the three members of the Marquis’s estate. Dale could hold his temper, but Adeline couldn’t. “You shut up, too, jerk. You and Anthony did this to Caleb just for that damn bitch, didn’t you?”
“It’s all her fault that Caleb is in this state. Every time he gets hurt, it’s because of her. He was just accompanying her on a visit, and now he’s crippled, almost dead. With Caleb in such a miserable condition, what right does she have to stand here and speak?” Adeline fumed, glaring at Sophie. “Damn bitch, why don’t you break a leg too?”
“Adeline, that’s enough,” Matthew and Gabriel said in unison, frowning at her. “You are the lady of the Marquis’s estate; watch your mouth.”
Dale, who had been silent, gave the father and son a cold look. “My wife doesn’t need lectures from either of you. Besides, she’s not wrong.”
