508.Chapter 508
508.Chapter 508
About fifteen minutes later, Benedict, Matthew, Anthony, and Sophie had all gathered in the study.
Benedict greeted Gabriel before sitting down, his demeanor indifferent and detached,
Matthew, after wheeling Anthony into the room, asked with a mix of exhaustion and impatience, “Father, is there a reason you’ve called us all here so late?”
By now, Sophie should have already returned to the Marquis’s estate with Caleb. After all, she was no longer the heiress of the Duke’s estate but the concubine of Caleb.
However, she had stayed behind under the pretense of wanting to discuss the day’s events with her father and brothers, but it was only for tonight. Tomorrow, she would have no choice but to return. Caleb and the others‘ patience with her was, after all, wearing thin.
Sophie had barely finished hiding the ledger when she was summoned to the study again. Her mind was preoccupied, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. The moment she stepped into the room, her eyes instinctively darted to Gabriel.
To her surprise, Gabriel’s face wasn’t twisted in the fury she had feared. Instead, it was cold and unreadable, which only heightened her unease. Her nerves were stretched taut, and she couldn’t relax at all.
Sophie forced herself to appear composed, quietly taking a seat alongside Matthew and the others, without uttering a word. “Matthew, Anthony, has Dylan reached out to either of you recently?” Gabriel sat behind his desk, his gaze casually sweeping over Matthew and Anthony.
Anthony shook his head first, looking worn out and fragile. “Ever since Dylan left the Stonor family, he hasn’t contacted me. I rarely leave the estate, so I haven’t reached out to him either.”
Matthew followed, his tone tinged with concern. “I haven’t heard from Dylan since his last visit. Father, is something wrong? Did something happen to him?”
Gabriel didn’t answer, instead turning his attention to Benedict. “And you, Benedict? Have you been in touch with Dylan?” Benedict’s expression remained calm as he replied, “No.”
But beneath his composed exterior, his thoughts were anything but settled. ‘Something’s wrong, he wondered. Benedict had a feeling his father would eventually turn his focus back to Dylan.
Luckily, Dylan had left long ago and was likely far away by now. Even if Gabriel wanted to track him down, it wouldn’t be easy.
So Benedict wasn’t overly worried. Still, something felt off. Gabriel wouldn’t suddenly bring up Dylan without a reason. Something must have happened. And it was probably connected to what Dylan had done before.
‘Is it about the ledger? Did someone try to sneak in tonight to steal it again? Who could it be? Could Dylan have shared something with Eliza?‘ he wondered.
The thought of Eliza leaving the Duke’s estate earlier today made Benedict uneasy.
Eliza had embarrassed Gabriel and the entire Duke’s estate. Gabriel wasn’t the type to let something like that slide.
‘If this really has to do with Eliza, then she’s in serious trouble,‘ Benedict wondered.
Benedict mulled over the situation, but he hadn’t yet realized that while the matter did involve Eliza, there was someone else caught up in it as well.
Sophie trembled, her head slightly bowed, not daring to utter a single word.
Gabriel’s piercing gaze swept across the room before finally landing on Sophie.
The reason was simple. It was just too obvious. Knowing his daughter inside and out, Gabriel immediately picked up on Sophie’s unusual behavior. What he hadn’t anticipated was that it would be Sophie.
Gabriel narrowed his eyes, and after a brief silence in the study, he suddenly slammed his palm onto the desk. The loud noise startled everyone in the room.
A split second later, his furious voice rang out. “Stand up.”
Almost instinctively, Sophie shot up from her chair. When she came to her senses and glanced around, she saw Matthew and the others staring at her in shock and conto Successfully unlocked!
‘I’m doomed,‘ she wondered. Sophie instantly understood the gravity of the situation. Fighting back the urge to cry, she still tried to salvage the moment.
So she turned to Gabriel and said, “Father, I–I was startled just now and didn’t hear clearly. Are you asking me to stand up, or is it someone else?” Her voice grew weaker and weaker as she spoke.

Gabriel’s icy stare bore into her, making her feel utterly terrified. That look sent chills down Sophie’s spine.
“What’s going on? What exactly happened?” Matthew still hadn’t figured out what was going on. Seeing Sophie on the verge of tears, he frowned and asked.
Gabriel’s icy voice cut through the tension. “Shut your mouth.” The words were directed at Matthew.
Gabriel’s sharp gaze swept over Matthew and Anthony. “I’ll deal with her now. You can stay and watch, or leave if you want, but don’t even think about interfering.”
Since the matter concerned Sophie, neither Matthew nor Anthony had any intention of leaving. Seeing Gabriel’s dark expression, they wisely kept their mouths shut. As for Benedict, he was even less likely to leave.
Benedict wanted to know what had happened and whether it was connected to Dylan or Eliza.
