507.Chapter 507
Since Gabriel kept her in check, Sophie wouldn’t hesitate to deal with his shadow guards without mercy.
“I’m here to see Father. I didn’t find him when I was with Benedict earlier. Are you sure he hasn’t come this way?” Sophie asked, her tone casual as she subtly inched closer.
The shadow guard shook his head. “Lord Mowbay hasn’t been here tonight, nor is he in the study.”
“Oh, I see. Alright then. I’ll head back first,” Sophie said, turning around. Under the cover of her sleeve, the poison powder she had just hooked under her fingernail was quietly scattered away.
The shadow guard’s nose twitched slightly, but he didn’t notice anything unusual.
Sophie walked away at a steady pace. Once her figure disappeared around the corner, the shadow guard prepared to leap back onto the roof. But just as he was about to move, his body suddenly froze. His expression shifted drastically, and in the next moment, he collapsed to the ground with a dull thud.
Hearing the sound, Sophie, who hadn’t gone far, immediately lifted her skirt and rushed back.
Seeing the shadow guard lying unconscious on the ground, Sophie smirked, knowing her plan had worked. Without wasting a moment, she pushed open the study door and stepped inside.
“The ledger? Where is it?” she murmured. Time was running out, so Sophie wasted no time and began tearing through Gabriel’s study the moment she stepped inside.
She uncovered plenty of ledgers, but none of them were the damned Padilla family ledger Eliza had demanded.
Soon, 15 minutes passed. Sophie had practically turned her father’s study upside down, yet the ledger Eliza wanted was nowhere to be found.
“What now? Could Eliza be messing with me? Maybe the ledger doesn’t even exist. Was this all just a setup?” With time slipping away, Sophie grew increasingly frantic.
In her frustration, Sophie dropped into Gabriel’s armchair. Her hand accidentally pressed against something on the desk, and suddenly, a sharp click echoed from the feng shui wall behind her.
The wall split down the middle, revealing a narrow gap. As the wall slid open, a small hidden chamber, barely large enough for a person, came into view.
Sophie’s eyes lit up instantly. She jumped out of the chair and rushed toward the opening.
Sophie’s eyes immediately landed on a ledger sitting at the very edge of the chamber. She flipped it open, and there it was— the Padilla family’s.
She exhaled in relief, feeling a weight lift off her chest. ‘Now that I have the ledger, Eliza would have no choice but to hand over the antidote, right?‘ she wondered.
Sophie was about to close the small secret room again, but as her peripheral vision swept across the contents of the room, she suddenly noticed that, apart from the ledger closest to the edge, most of the other items inside were actually things used by women.
Her brows furrowed in confusion. ‘What are women’s things doing in Father’s secret study chamber?‘ she wondered. ‘And not just any items–there are several pieces of jewelry, dazzling and clearly worth a fortune.‘
Gabriel had never given Zoie anything like this.
‘Wait a minute. Could these pieces of jewelry belong to other women?‘ she wondered. The realization hit her like a slap to the face, and anger surged through her veins. ‘Could it be Caroline? Damn it. Father is still hung up on that bitch.‘
Zoie had spent her entire life devoted to him, even dying in childbirth to give him a child. And yet, in Gabriel’s heart, there was only Caroline.
The more Sophie thought about it, the more her fury grew. Without hesitation, she reached for the jewelry.
‘Mother was gone, and yet he still dared to cling to memories of Caroline? The one he should be remembering was Zoie, my mother, not the woman who had stolen everything from my mother and left me to grow up as an illegitimate child, Sophie roared inwardly.
Overcome with rage, Sophie grabbed the jewelry and hurled it to the ground. The crash was deafening, shattering the tense silence of the study.
The sound snapped Sophie out of her fury, puli Successfully unlocked! earlier.” She cursed, realization dawning.
amn it. It’s the poison powder I scattered
Sophie quickly remembered its effects, lethal in large amounts, and in smaller doses, it could stir emotions, pushing them to extremes. Her anger had spiraled out of control, fueled by the powder’s influence.
Panic surged through her as she glanced outside. She couldn’t afford to waste another second. Clutching the ledger tightly,

she bolted for the door.
As she passed the doorway, her gaze fell on the shadow guard sprawled lifeless on the ground, black blood seeping from his lips. He was already gone.
The commotion in the study had done its job, drawing the nearby shadow guards and Gabriel.
Sophie had barely fled when Gabriel arrived at the study’s entrance. His eyes flicked to the dead shadow guard, his expression hardening as he strode into the room.
As soon as he entered, he saw the small secret compartment in his study already open, and the jewelry scattered all over the floor.
