Jean’s temper flared quickly but faded just as fast. Or rather when it came to Dylan, she had always shown a level of tolerance she rarely afforded others.

Dylan smiled, standing in place as he watched Jean return to the private dining room.

He turned, about to find a quiet corner to have a smoke, but then, he saw Noelle standing there. 

He had no idea how long she had been there, but from the look of her face, she had likely heard everything Jean’s commanding tone and his own subdued responses. 

Dylan clenched his hands tightly again as an unprecedented sense of humiliation swelled in his chest. He opened his mouth, as if wanting to say something, but no words came out in the end. 

Noelle didn’t speak, either. She simply nodded at him before continuing forward. 

“You must think I’m pathetic,” Dylan suddenly said. 

Noelle paused in her tracks, then shook her head. “No.” 

“You don’t have to comfort me,” Dylan replied with a bitter smile. “No one knows better than me the kind of pathetic state I’m in right now. But I don’t regret it. After all, I did what I had to do as a son.” 

“Yeah, and I think you’ve done quite well,” Noelle said softly. 

Her words sounded as if she was endorsing Dylan’s actions, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that she was mocking him. 

Yet when he met her gaze, there was nothing but sincerity in it. 

He clenched his teeth involuntarily. 

He had no regrets. If given the chance to do it all over again he would still make the same choice.
