Simon’s face shifted into a wry smile as he said, “Isn’t it common knowledge, Joshua? Years back, Quiana was promised away in a childhood engagement. Now, it’s time for her to walk down the aisle.”
Mandy’s eyes twinkled as she chipped in, “Absolutely, if Winona ties the knot, she’d be stealing Quiana’s joy.”
The Hawley family had already done their homework on Quiana. As a kid, she shone bright for a few years but got blacklisted for decking someone. Later, her adoptive parents met their end in a car crash, leaving her to fend for her little brother.
She scraped by selling veggies at a stand and dabbled in fortune–telling. She was tough as nails and wild to boot.
Joshua’s wife, Mary Hawley, casually remarked, “Since no one’s the wiser, if Winona gets hitched, it’ll be our little secret, right?”
Joshua’s gaze turned icy. “Are you implying you are too good for Julius?”
Simon wouldn’t dare show his true feelings. He pasted on a smile and replied, “We’d never dare think that.”
Edward’s face was a mask as he looked at Quiana, his eyes steady. “What do you have to say?”
Quiana was lounging, legs crossed, gnawing on a rib with a rough–and–tumble air that was far from ladylike.
Joshua’s brow furrowed. ‘Dad, about this marriage-
“I’m asking her!” Edward’s gaze cut through, his authority silencing Joshua..
“Me, huh… Quiana tossed the bone aside, wiped her mouth and hands with a napkin, propped her chin on her hand, and lazily regarded Edward with a slight smile. I’m here to call off the engagement.”
The words sent shockwaves through everyone present,
Joshua’s eyes turned dark. “You think you can just back out? Who do you think you are?”
Edward was torn up about Julius, feeling he owed him. He wanted to see Julius settled and cared for before his own time was
Julius was a heartthrob, but his disabled legs, frail health, and mercurial temperament kept people at bay. Otherwise, the Hawleys wouldn’t be so keen on this marriage
Simon and Mandy’s faces tightened in surprise. They never saw Quiana’s boldness coming
Mandy tugged at Winona’s sleeve, whispering urgently, “Do you even know what you’re saying?”
They didn’t want Winona to marry Julius, but they also didn’t want to blow the chance to be connected to the Hawleys. After all, the Larson family’s city success was largely due to Hawley influence.
Whether from anger or something else, Edward suddenly broke into a fit of coughing.
“Dad!” Joshua leaped up to pat Edward’s back, while Mary poured him a glass of water.
Simon panicked and quickly said, “Mr. Hawley, please don’t take it to heart. Quiana’s just young and foolish; the marriage
isn’t off
“Apologize to Mr. Hawley this instant!” Mandy insisted, reaching for Quiana.
