Chapter 64 Fiancé of Scarlett

**Mia’s POV**

“What do you mean you’re getting married?” I nearly choked on my smoothie, staring at Scarlett across our usual corner table at The Morning Bean. When I told Scarlett that I needed to meet with her, she soon came.

The morning sunlight streaming through the window caught her fiery hair, making it look like actual flames. “Since when do you believe in marriage?”

I set my glass down carefully, studying my best friend’s face. “Morton Industries? The luxury brand?”

“The very same.” She took a delicate sip of her coffee. “Apparently they need our distribution networks in Asia, and we need their European market presence. A marriage is the simplest way to seal the deal.”

“But you haven’t even met him!” The words burst out before I could stop them.

“Details.” She waved her hand dismissively, but I noticed she wouldn’t quite meet my eyes. “Besides, I’ve seen his pictures. At least he’s hot.”

“Scar…”

“Don’t be afraid.” She pointed her spoon at me accusingly. “I won’t fall in love him.”

The words hit me. Scarlett is right. I am the one who fall in love hopelessly with my contract husband. I failed because I expected Kyle Branson to magically develop emotionsI with me.

Scarlett’s expression softened. “Hey.” She reached across the table, squeezing my hand. “I didn’t mean it like that. I just… I know what I’m getting into, okay?”

“Right.” I managed a smile. “And the shopping spree you’re planning with that ten million has nothing to do with it?”

Her eyes lit up. “Oh my god, wait until you see the wedding dress budget! We’re going to Paris next week to meet with designers You’re coming, by the way. No arguments.”

“Scar, I can’t. Mom’s surgery is tomorrow, remember?”

“Right, shit, sorry.” She checked her watch. “Speaking of which, shouldn’t we head to the hospital? I want to meet this hot doctor of yours properly.”

“He’s not my-“I started to protest, but she was already grabbing her purse.

The hospital corridors felt familiar now, though they still made my stomach clench. Scarlett’s heels clicked against the polished floor as we made our way to Mom’s room, the sound echoing off sterile walls.

“Mrs. Branson.” Emma, the head nurse, smiled warmly. “Dr. Pierce is just finishing his rounds. He’ll be here shortly.”

“Thanks, Emma.” I moved to Mom’s bedside, taking her cool hand in mine. “Hey, Mom. Look who’s here to cause trouble.”

“Excuse you, I am a delight.” Scarlett settled into the visitor’s chai with her usual grace. “Your daughter is being mean to me, Mrs. Williams. You should wake up and scold her.”

exactly the same as before.

“You’ll never believe what she’s planning, Mom,” I said, adjusting Mom’s blanket. “Remember how she always said marriage was for suckers?”

“Still true.” Scarlett inspected her manicure. “I’m just a sucker with excellent business sense.‘

“Scar!” I hissed, mortified.

Nate just laughed, the sound warm and genuine. “Dr. Nate Pierce.ve heard quite a bit about you, actually. Particularly your talent for getting Mia into trouble.”

“Paradise was her idea,” I blurted, then immediately wanted to die

“Paradise?” Scarlett’s eyebrows shot up.

My face burned. “Can we focus on Mom’s surgery?”

“Of course.” Nate’s expression turned professional as he checked Mom’s charts. “Everything looks good for tomorrow. Her vitals are strong, and the initial surgery site has healed perfectly.”

“See?” Scarlett squeezed my hand. “She’s going to be fine. And then you can finally tell her about dumping that royal jackass.”

“Scarlett!”

“What? It’s true.” She turned to Nate. “You must have noticed how much happier she is lately. Living well really is the best revenge.”

Nate’s eyes met mine over Mom’s bed. “I have noticed some changes.”

Something in his tone made my stomach flutter. I quickly looked away.

“Mrs. Williams,” Scarlett announced, apparently deciding a subject change was needed. “Your daughter is being deliberately obtuse about a very handsome doctor who clearly adores her. As her best friend, I feel obligated to intervene. Perhaps you could wake up and help me knock some sense into her?”

“Oh my god.” I buried my face in my hands. “I’m so sorry, Nate.”

But he was laughing again. “No need to apologize. I find your friend refreshing.”

Scarlett drawled. “You two should really have dinner sometime. You know, to discuss medical things. Very professional.”

“Actually…” Nate cleared his throat. “I was going to ask if you’d like to grab coffee after tomorrow’s surgery? To celebrate it going well?”

My heart stuttered. “I…”

“She’d love to.” Scarlett answered for me. “She takes her coffee with one sugar and a splash of cream, in case you were wondering.”

“I’ll remember that.” His smile made something warm unfurl in my chest.

After he left, Scarlett turned to me with a triumphant grin. “You’re welcome.”
