Chapter 65 Tired

**Mia’s POV✶✶

I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the photo on Scarlett’s phone. There they were Kyle and Taylor, captured in perfect high- society harmony at some charity event I hadn’t even known about. His hand rested on her lower back with casual intimacy, while she smiled up at him with that practiced adoration I used to believe was real.

The same Kyle who, just yesterday, had the audacity to accuse me of inappropriate behavior with other men. The same Kyle who’d made me feel guilty for simply talking to male friends. My fingers clenched around my coffee cup, the ceramic hot against my skin. My coffee turned bitter on my tongue. Just yesterday, he’d been in my bed, accusing me of inappropriate behavior with other men. The hypocrisy made my stomach turn.

Ah, Last Thursday, I remember.Scarlett peered at the date stamp Yeah, the Children’s Cancer Foundation gala. Why?Last Thursday. While I was reviewing construction plans for the children’s center, he was parading around with Taylor. The irony made me want to laugh, or maybe scream.

I need to get to the hospital.I stood abruptly, needing to move, to do something besides stare at that damning photo. Mom’s surgery is in a few hours.

The hospital corridors felt endless as I made my way to Mom’s room the. My heels clicked against the polished floor, each step echoing with purpose I didn’t quite feel. The familiar antiseptic smell mixed with something floral someone had been bringing fresh flowers again.

I stopped short in the doorway. Kyle stood by Mom’s bed, his perfect suit incongruous against the medical equipment. He turned at my entrance, his stormgrey eyes unreadable.

Something in my chest constricted. How dare he? How dare he stand there, pretending to care?

What are you doing here? The question came out colder than Antarctic ice.

Checking on your mother’s condition. His voice held that carefully neutral tone I’d grown to hate.

Don’t.I moved past him to Mom’s bedside, straightening her blanket with perhaps more force than necessary. Don’t pretend to care now. It’s insulting.

Mia-

She wouldn’t want you here.My hands shook slightly as I adjusted Mom’s IV line. Whether she’s in a coma or not, that hasn’t changed.

He was quiet for a long moment. When he spoke, his voice held something I couldn’t quite identify. Something flickered in his stormgrey eyes. You’re being irrational.

And you’re being a hypocrite.I forced myself to lower my voice, conscious of where we were. I caught myself, took a steadying breath. Just go. Mom wouldn’t want you here anyway.

Something flickered in his eyes. You’re angry.

Angry? The word tasted like ashes. No, Kyle. I’m tired. So. Just process the divorce papers. Like we agreed.

Mia-

Now.My voice cracked slightly. You really should go.

He stood there for a moment longer, something unspoken hanging in the air between us. Then, without another word, he left. The door closed behind him with quiet finality.

I sank into the chair beside Mom’s bed, suddenly exhausted. Her hand felt cool in mine as I laced our fingers together.

I wish you were here, Mom.My voice came out small in the quiet room. Really here. You’d know exactly what to say right

now.I traced the familiar lines of her palm.

The monitors beeped steadily the only response I’d get. I leaned loser, pressing my forehead against our joined hands.

The surgery’s in two hours. My voice wavered. Nate says everything looks perfect, but I’m so scared. What if something goes wrong? What if-

Those aren’t the kind of thoughts we want running through your head right now.Nate’s warm voice came from the doorway. I quickly wiped my eyes, straightening up. How long have you been standing there?

Long enough to know you need this.He held out a tissue and what looked like a protein bar. Can’t have you fainting during the wait.

I don’t faint.But I took both offerings, managing a small smile.

Nate moved to check Mom’s charts, his movements precise and confident. Everything looks perfect, Mia. Her numbers are exactly where we want them.

Promise?I hated how vulnerable I sounded.

He met my eyes directly. I promise to do everything in my power to bring her back to you.

Something in his steady gaze made my chest tighten. Thank you. I meant it for more than just his promise.

Try to eat something. He gestured to the protein bar. I’ll be back in an hour to start prep.

After he left, I forced myself to take small bites of the bar, though it tasted like cardboard. The waiting became unbearable. I needed air, needed to move, needed to do something besides sit here counting Mom’s breaths.
