Chapter 156 Owen Reduced To Digging Through Trash
Camila stood motionless, completely indifferent to William’s tearful pleas
William felt as though his heart was being torn apart. Regret consumed him entirely. If he had known his wis would cause her so much pain, robbing her of her health and shortening her life, he would never have made that terrible mistake He wished desperately that he could turn back time. If given the chance, he would protect her with everything he had, ensuring she never suffered again.
But life offered no second chances. He had hurt the woman he loved most, and no amount of remorse could undo the damage.
William dropped to his knees at Camila’s feet, grabbing her hand and using it to slap his own face repeatedly
The crisp sound of slaps echoed in the hospital corridor. Soon, bright red slap marks appeared on his pale and handsome face.
Camila stood there like a lifeless doll, allowing William to manipulate her hand without resistance.
Hazel couldn’t bear to watch any longer. She rushed forward and shoved William away with all her strength
Caught off guard, William collapsed onto the cold, hard floor.
Hazel gently cradled Camila’s hand, her heart aching at the sight of her palm, now red and slightly swollen. Fury ignited in Hazel’s eyes as she turned to glare at William with undisguised contempt.
“If you truly feel sorry for Ms. Jackson and want to make amends, stop showing up and making her life harder! You know she despises you, yet you keep clinging to her. Are you deliberately trying to make things worse for us? Hazel snapped With that, Hazel held out Camila’s swollen palm, her voice sharp with accusation. “Is this your idea of punishing yourself, or are you just tormenting Ms. Jackson even more?”
William’s gaze fell on Camila’s injured hand, and a wave of piercing pain surged through his chest. He was so overwhelmed with sorrow that he couldn’t even utter a word, only shaking his head repeatedly.
His eyes stayed fixed on Camila, filled with pleading and regret, but she didn’t spare him a single glance.
The suffocating pain in his chest left him gasping for air, unable to even utter an apology.
To Hazel, William’s pitiful display was nothing but an act. ‘Where was all this supposed “love” before? Now he puts on this show of devotion. Who is he trying to fool?’ she thought bitterly.
Since her release from prison, Camila had tried countless times to prove her innocence to William. Yet he had never believed her, always siding with Agnes. His so–called love was cheap and disgusting.
Hazel shot William a cold glance before pulling Camila away without a second thought.
William reached out desperately, trying to grab hold of Camila, but his hand grasped nothing but air. He wanted to chase after her and beg for forgiveness, but the searing pain in his stomach and the stabbing ache in his chest held him back.
With a heavy thud, his body collapsed onto the floor. His eyes, filled with regret, remained fixed on Camila’s retreating figure. “Camila…” he whispered hoarsely.
Camila never looked back, leaving William to wallow in his misery, abandoned and broken.
Outside the hospital, Camila drifted toward the bus stop, her mind foggy, with Hazel walking quietly by her side
Before she even reached the bus stop, her gaze was drawn to a trash can near the signpost.
A man missing both legs was struggling to sift through the garbage piled beside the trash can. After a long search, he pulled out a moldy bun, clutching it like a treasure before devouring it hungrily.
He was filthy from head to toe, his short hair tangled and matted from neglect. His head hung low, and the long bangs covering his forehead obscured most of his face, making it impossible to see his features.
Flies buzzed chaotically around the trash can, but he seemed completely oblivious. Camila’s gaze lingered on the frail man, and a pang of sympathy welled up in her chest.
Some people were born into privilege, enjoying wealth and comfort, while others were destined to face hardship and struggle from the very start.
Though his face was hidden, the condition of his skin suggested he was still young.
To lose both legs at such a young age meant losing the ability to live a normal life, leaving him to rely on scavenging through trash just to survive.
It was autumn, and the weather was mild. But when winter came, it would be unbearable for him.

Looking at him, Camila couldn’t help but think of herself. Her life was already a mess, yet here she was, feeling sorry for someone else.
But perhaps it was because she had once trudged through darkness and endured the rain that she could better understand the pain of others. She felt the urge to offer others help.
Camila turned and walked into a nearby convenience store. She bought some bread and water and then approached the man. Her voice was soft as she said, “That bun’s moldy. It’ll make you sick. Here, take this instead.”
She handed him the bag, which contained bread, water, and some money. She kept just 3 dollars for her bus fare and gave the rest to him.
The man froze as her gentle voice reached him. His frantic eating came to an abrupt halt, and he sat there stiffly, Behind the curtain of his messy hair, his eyes flickered with fear, shame, and helplessness.
Camila bent down slightly, her gaze tender as she looked at him. Her voice was soft and soothing as she said, “Here, take it But the man remained frozen, as if he hadn’t heard her, his body trembling faintly.
Camila assumed he must have been bullied often, leaving him wary of strangers like her. She softened her tone even further, saying, “It’s okay. I just want to help you.” As she spoke, she reached out to take the moldy bun from his hand.
His eyes shifted to her delicate, lifeless hand, drained of color. A surge of bitterness overwhelmed him, and tears started to fall uncontrollably. One tear slipped from his eye, landing gently on the back of Carmila’s hand.
Camila paused, her heart tightening with sorrow. She thought to herself, ‘This man must have gone so long without feeling warmth. Even the smallest act of kindness from a stranger stands out in his heart. It moves him to tears!
