“Last night nothing happened, right?” 

As he opened his mouth to say something, Emma Johnson shot him a glance that cut through the air. 

Ethan Carter found himself momentarily speechless; Emma’s detached gaze felt as cold as that of a stranger. 

Since she had laid it out so plainly, what more could he say? 

Breakfast concluded in silence between them. 

“It’s hard to get a cab around here, you know that. Let me take you back to the office.” 

Ethan offered, willing to lend a hand. Five years ago, he would never have bothered with such things, but now he found himself unable to stop thinking about Emma’s well- being. 

“Then I’ll take you up on that.” 

Emma accepted the offer with a calm demeanor. Though she had no desire to maintain any emotional ties with Ethan, she didn’t go out of her way to push him away. After all, he was still her superior, and that connection lingered. 

“Not a problem,” 

Ethan replied, his voice steady as he made his way to the door. 

“Mrs. Zhang, we’re leaving now. Please let Grandpa know when he wakes up.” 

Emma offered a polite smile to Mrs. Zhang as they departed together. 

She didn’t blame Mrs. Zhang for last night’s events; deep down, she understood that it was her grandfather’s will. There was no way Mrs. Zhang would dare go against his wishes. Even if she felt a tinge of discomfort, Emma had no intention of making things

To him, Emma and Ethan looked like a perfect couple, and his greatest wish was to see them reconcile.

The drive back to the office was steeped in silence, the atmosphere heavy with tension. Ethan caught glimpses of her indifferent expression out of the corner of his eye, his brow furrowing as if to crush a fly.
