That made Lila fall silent for a while. Chuckling softly, Kieran pinched her cheek.
He asked, "Are you sleepy?"
It was close to midnight and long past their usual bedtime. Thunder started to strike outside the window, which meant Lila would have a hard time falling asleep.
Kieran leaned toward her. Before she could react, he had lifted her into his arms and brought her into his bedroom. He placed her in bed.
She insisted, "I'll sleep in my bed."
Kieran chuckled softly, his magnetic and soothing voice bristling against her heart.
He moved her further into the bed and sat beside her. She watched as he pulled the blanket over her and lay down on her side.
A small nightlight dimly illuminated the room.
"Kieran, I..."
"Lila," he interrupted her, wrapping her gently in his arms. "We're married now. Sharing a bed isn't inappropriate."
He patted her back softly. "I won't do anything. Just sleep tight. Okay?"
Lila felt relieved that the dim lighting hid her flushed face.
They were indeed married. By that logic, sharing a bed wasn't inappropriate.
Still...
She clenched her fist tightly. As the thunder tore through the sky, she reflexively leaned closer into his arms, thinking, "Just this once."
Perhaps it was the comfort of his embrace or simply her exhaustion, but she drifted off to sleep almost instantly.
As he felt her breathing slow and even out, Kieran lowered his head, kissing her forehead softly.
"Lila, I love you deeply."
