When I stepped out of the studio, I didn’t see anyone, but soon I heard the round of hurried footsteps approaching me.

Pete, who had been crouching on the steps outside the studio, rushed toward me when he saw me, pulling me into a big hug. His embrace was warm and trembling, his voice choked with emotion.

“I’m back!” he exclaimed.

“Mm.” I patted his back in response.

“My brother took back control of my company’s business, sent me abroad, and confiscated my phone and passport. I had to sneak back in on a smuggler’s boat.”

It was obvious that he had never suffered like this before being born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Although he wore sunglasses, I could tell that his eyes behind them were likely filled with tears.

“My dad even forced me to go on blind dates. I refused, so he hit me,” he continued, sounding like a child who was spilling all his grievances. “But when I see you, it feels like all the suffering doesn’t matter anymore.”

In truth, finding a suitable wife from a similar background for him wasn’t a bad idea. I stayed silent and watched him until he calmed down himself.

“I’ll take you to lunch and then send you home.”

I turned to leave, but he grabbed my hand and said, “Ms. Ari, can’t you give me some encouragement? My enemies tormented my body, but I need you to strengthen my resolve.”

“Stop saying things like that. Let’s go grab some food first.”

I pulled my hand back and crossed my arms, looking at him. I blurted out,” Pete Shelman, you’re not a child anymore. Can you wake up? I’ve never once said I liked you, and yet you’ve already thrown away your livelihood for me.

“What do you want me to say? Do you want me to encourage you to continue defying your family? Don’t be foolish. It’s not even worth it.”
