I pushed him away. The smell of alcohol on his breath was overwhelming as if I had been drinking too.

Though this was his first time being so drunk, it was something I would have done when I was younger. Back then, I was constantly anxious. I would swing between high spirits and thoughts of giving up. I even snuck out of the school dormitory to experience the taste of alcohol just because of him.

His sudden confession of liking me caught me off guard. If it were me from before, I would have eagerly. responded. Was his affection not what I had always wanted?

In the past, just hearing Nicholas’s name would have made me rush to him without hesitation. But now, it felt like something was missing.

It seemed that when two people were together, whether they liked each other or not was not that important anymore.

I held his arm and helped him take off his coat and shoes. “I don’t like talking to people who’ve had too much to drink.”

Nicholas froze. He should have had a child once. “If you don’t want to have children, we won’t.”

I snuggled deeper into the blanket. From the corner of my eye, I saw from his body and breathing that he took a long time to calm down.
